The BBL 12 finals are just days away and the makeup of the ladder will all but certainly be decided by the end of this match between the Hobart Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat in Launceston on Wednesday.
A win for the Heat will secure the third position on the Big Bash League ladder, which will all but guarantee them a match on Sunday against the winner of the Renegades and Thunder. The Hurricanes see this match as a must-win and, in doing so, could possibly book a place in The Eliminator on Friday.
The Hurricanes will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak on Wednesday. In their only other game at UTAS Stadium this season, Hobart were winners over the league-leading Perth Scorchers. However, their performances over the last week do not make them a betting proposition at all. The Heat are doing an incredible job of finding ways to win, and they’re great value to do so again in Launceston ($2.05).
Josh Brown will be looking to attack the Hurricanes heavily. He will have learnt from his dismissal to Riley Meredith in Brisbane and, should he adjust correctly, will be able to build his innings before targetting the shorter of the square boundaries. Should Brown get himself in, he is a live chance of clearing the rope consistently and being the Heat’s highest runscorer ($6).
Matt Kuhnemann had a particularly difficult day against the Hurricanes in Brisbane, but in recent weeks has been one of the Heat’s better bowlers. The only Big Bash match at UTAS this season saw Paddy Dooley take four wickets, suggesting the ground will suit spin bowling. The larger ground will assist Kuhnemann, along with the natural variation he gets with his style of bowling. A return to his best will see him take two or more wickets for the Heat ($2.70).
Key matchup: Joel Paris v Spencer Johnson
These two tall left-arm bowlers have been brilliant for their respective sides in vastly different roles, which makes for an interesting matchup on Wednesday. Joel Paris is used by the Hurricanes early in the innings to swing the ball, trying to take early wickets. Spencer Johnson has been entrusted by captain Usman Khawaja to bowl overs at the death for the Heat, executing specific game plans at the death to lift the Heat to wins. This match could be defined by an excellent spell of swing bowling by Paris, or phenomenal execution by Johnson at the death.
