Giants v Tigers AFL R12 match preview
This Sunday afternoon, the Richmond Tigers travel up to Sydney to face off against GWS at GIANTS Stadium. Both sides come into this game with inconsistent form and will be looking to improve upon their poor start to the season.
Last weekend, the GWS Giants faced the Geelong Cats down at GMHBA Stadium. Going into the match as massive underdogs, the Giants caused one of the biggest upsets of the season so far, running out winners by seven points. In his 200th match, GWS captain Toby Greene put on a show with 19 disposals and four goals.
Despite a poor start to the season, wins over both 2022 grand finalists and Adelaide — a top-eight team — show that at their best, GWS are not too far off. However, their greatest weakness is their inconsistency; each week, we get a different performance from the Giants, most notably shown when they gave the West Coast Eagles their sole win of the season. If the Giants are going to get on a winning run, they are going to need to put on a similar performance to last week.
The Tigers last weekend came up against one of the in-form teams in the AFL as they hosted Port Adelaide at the MCG. A game that the Power led for most of the day, the Tigers regularly threatened to take the lead but eventually fell short by 10 points. Despite the loss, the effort of Tim Taranto cannot be understated; he had 33 disposals, seven tackles and four goals as he attempted to single-handedly carry the Tigers over the line.
Following this loss, the Tigers now sit in 15th spot with only three wins and a draw this season. Despite this their percentage sits at 98.4, suggesting that they aren’t as bad as their record suggests.
GWS v Richmond betting strategy
Although this match is between the 14th-placed Giants and the 15th-placed Tigers, they have shown many times this season that they can perform much better than they have so far. Since 2014, the home team has won every single encounter between these two sides, and with GWS hosting this match as well as coming off a win, it’s hard to bet against them. The $1.90 for a Giants win looks like good value.
Looking for goalscorers this weekend, it is hard to go past Jesse Hogan. Despite being held goalless last week, Hogan has kicked multiple majors in nine out the 11 games so far this season. He is the primary target inside 50 for the Giants and is one of the best contested marks in the competition. Look for Hogan to create many chances and kick two or more goals at $1.81.
When looking for high disposal getters, Richmond midfielder Tim Taranto stands out. In his first match against his old side, Taranto will be looking to make a statement and continue on with his good form. Collecting over 30 disposals in six of the last seven weeks, the tough midfielder consistently gets his own footy in the contest. Back Taranto for 30 or disposals this weekend at $1.64 with the top AFL bookmakers.
Key matchup: Greene v Baker

Following his four-goal effort last weekend, expect Toby Greene to once again be at his terrorising best on Sunday. One of the best small forwards in the competition, Greene is always dangerous inside 50 — whether setting up a teammate or scoring himself.
Liam Baker looks the most likely option to man up on Greene. Baker has the speed to match the GWS star but will need to rely upon others to assist in the marking contest. Baker will also be looking to run off Greene, using his own ball-carrying ability to the benefit of the team.
Keeping Greene quiet will go a long way in the Tigers winning this one.
