Suns v Crows AFL match preview
The Gold Coast Suns return to TIO Stadium in Darwin this Saturday to face the Adelaide Crows in one of the highlight matchups in round 12 of the 2023 AFL Premiership.
Both teams will be full of confidence after posting big wins last weekend. The Suns overcome a slow start to haul in the Bulldogs at TIO Stadium, while the Crows bounced back with a hard-fought win over the Lions at Adelaide Oval.
The Suns continued their recent improvement with a solid four-quarter effort against the in-form Bulldogs. Gold Coast started slowly to trail by 20 points in the opening minutes but steadied, built a 24-point lead in the third quarter, and withheld a late fightback by the courageous Dogs. It was a scrappy and gutsy win given the Suns lost the inside 50, mark, and disposal counts.
The Suns were more efficient inside 50, won the hitouts 55 to 33, and prevailed 158 to 141 in the contested possession count. They also tackled harder and repeatedly disrupted the attacking efforts of the Bulldogs, who could not match the Suns’ overall intensity across the park.
After a disappointing loss to the Bulldogs in round 10, the Adelaide Crows bounced back to their best with an impressive 17-point win over the Lions. The key stats from the game were evenly split, but the Crows booted truly in front of the big sticks while the Lions sprayed their attempts and ultimately kicked 18 behinds.
The Adelaide forward line is stacked with junior talent, but Taylor Walker is still the big dog and kicked 3.0 last weekend to show the youngsters how it’s done. The Crows are the competition’s third-best tackling side and fifth-best clearance team this year, and that pressure around the contest could be critical in this clash.
Gold Coast v Adelaide betting strategy
The top AFL betting sites are unable to split these sides with coin-flip odds available for both teams. The Crows have struggled on the road this season with a 1-3 record, so we are leaning toward the Suns to record successive wins in the Top End. They are suited by the warm conditions and will be buoyant after defeating the Dogs.
Key matchup: Rowell v Dawson

Gold Coast midfielder Matt Rowell has been quietly going about his business in 2023, but he was terrific last weekend with 29 disposals, seven tackles, 16 clearances and a goal. Rowell has seemingly overcome his injury struggles, has played all 11 games this season, and appears to be finally delivering on his prodigious potential.
Adelaide midfielder Jordan Dawson is also enjoying a stellar year, and he produced another big effort against the stacked Brisbane centre squad. The 26-year-old finished with 32 disposals, 10 tackles and two clearances in a match-winning performance. The former Swan links seamlessly with Rory Laird to produce a dynamic midfield combination that will be crucial to deciding this contest.
