Florence & Gilmore to Miss 2025 World Sur League CT season
Stephanie Gilmore and John John Florence, two of surfing’s most iconic names, have decided to take a step back from competing in the 2025 World Surf League CT Tour.
Their pauses leave a void on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) but also set the stage for fresh talent to emerge.

The three-time World Champion is coming off an incredible 2024 season where he clinched his third title, solidifying his place as one of surfing’s all-time greats.
Florence, now 32, welcomed his son Darwin with wife Lauryn last year and is shifting his focus.
“I’ll be surfing in a different way this year,” Florence said.
“Exploring, finding new waves, and pushing my surfing to new heights while sharing my adventures.”
While fans will miss him on the CT, Florence plans to return in 2026 with renewed vigour, armed with a WSL wildcard.
Stephanie Gilmore, originally priced as an $11 hope with Marantelli Bet to claim her ninth World Champion title, is also taking time away to heal and recharge.
Known for her unparalleled style and competitive spirit, Gilmore has been a dominant force on the CT for nearly two decades.
However, lingering injuries and a desire to explore new adventures have prompted her decision.
“This time will allow me to focus on healing and redirect my energy toward surfing globally,” Gilmore explained.
Her break opens the door for Brazil’s Luana Silva, who takes over her spot on the 2025 CT roster.
Gilmore, like Florence, plans a return in 2026, keeping fans hopeful for more moments of brilliance.
Their absences undoubtedly shift the dynamics of the Tour, with new faces like Mexico’s Alan Cleland Jr. and other rookies stepping into the spotlight.
WSL Commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer praised both champions for their contributions while expressing optimism about the future.
“While we’ll miss them, their time away opens doors for rising stars to shine,” Miley-Dyer said.
“The 2025 CT is packed with talent, and we’re excited to see what this new generation brings.”
As Florence and Gilmore take a well-deserved pause, the 2025 season is set to deliver a blend of seasoned competitors and fresh energy.
