Friday night football will continue when the Parramatta Eels host the New Zealand Warriors at Commbank Stadium.
It has been over 12 months since these two sides met, and the team lists have changed drastically, as have the circumstances of the two clubs. The Warriors have been able to return home for the first time since 2019, while the Eels are racing the clock to capitalise on their premiership window. Given all that’s changed, could the Warriors cause an upset come full time on Friday night?
The Warriors have not only seen changes off the field, but on it as well. When these two sides last met, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck was the captain, the halves were a major weakness and Reece Walsh was starting the game from the bench. Meanwhile, for the Eels, they were without gun five-eighth Dylan Brown. The Eels may also start without forward pack leader Junior Paulo, should he fail to back up from the State of Origin decider in Brisbane.
The Eels have made a horrible habit of losing matches they should comfortably win. It happened at Commbank Stadium in round six against the Wests Tigers, and again in round fourteen when they were thumped by the Bulldogs. This match has traits of a game the Eels could lose too. However, should they win, it would not be in a blow out given the Warriors renewed belief. The Warriors are a great value play on the +16.5 point line paying $2.
Reece Walsh returns for the Warriors having fallen ill with Covid-19 and will be looking to repay the faith the Warriors instilled in him when they took him on from the Broncos in 2021. Walsh is set to leave the club at seasons end and will be looking to leave the Warriors on a high. Walsh represents great value as an any time try scorer paying $4.20.
Euan Aitken returns to the back row for the Warriors and will have his hands full marking up on Isaiah Papali’i. The Eels left edge back rower is one of the most destructive forwards in the NRL and has returned to that form in the last week after his huge game against the Tigers on Saturday. Considering his form and skill, Papali’i is great value as an anytime try scorer paying $2.80.
Given the resurgence of the Warriors and uncertainty around the Eels, total points markets are a valuable one to play in. The current market is set at 42.5 points and should the Eels struggle as they could very well do, the unders will be the smart play. This will be because the Warriors aren’t expected to pile on a mountain of points, and the unders at $1.90 is the more likely outcome.
KEY MATCH UP: REAGAN CAMPBELL-GILLARD v ADDIN FONUA-BLAKE
Two big forwards will collide on Friday night, and the battle of the two enforcers will intriguing to watch unfold. Recent reports have suggested that Campbell-Gillard’s on field performance is not preventing his NSW Blues selection and he will be looking for force the selectors hand for 2023 should the Blues be defeated on Wednesday. Fonua-Blake is one of the most destructive forwards in the NRL, with an incredible ability to break tackles and gain post-contact meters at the drop of a hat. This clash should set up the battle of the middle third which will decide the victor of this clash.
