The Cronulla Sharks will be looking to safeguard top spot on the NRL ladder when they travel to Parramatta and take on the Eels this Thursday night in round 13.

The Eels lost to the Rabbitohs by 16 points on Saturday — their fifth defeat in a row. Parra fans will now be hoping the return of two of their stars will be enough to stop them from slipping to last place.

The Sharks find themselves in a polar-opposite position. Missing two of their best players, Cronulla will be desperate to make amends for their horrid loss to the Panthers and maintain their position as leaders of the league.

Eels interim coach Trent Barrett has named club captain Clint Gutherson and star halfback Mitchell Moses to return from injury, with centre Will Penisini and bench forward Wiremu Greig also back in the fold.

Morgan Harper, Daejarn Asi, and Joey Lussick have all been dropped from the side, while J’maine Hopgood is away for State of Origin. Brendan Hands starts at hooker, Joe Ofahengaue lines up at lock, and Kelma Tuilagi moves into the back row, with Shaun Lane dropping to the bench.

Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon needs only to replace halfback Nicho Hynes and lock Cameron McInnes, who have been named in the New South Wales side for Origin I. Bradon Trindall steps into the halves and Jack Williams joins the front row, while Braden Hamlin-Uele returns via the interchange.

Eels v Sharks predictions

The Sharks come into this clash having won 15 of their last 17 games against sides that are on a losing streak. Meanwhile, the Eels have lost both halves in each of their last three games, and their last five losses have all been by 13 points or more. However, the return of Moses and Gutherson to the starting side will bring much-needed experience and direction for Parra, so back them to cover the -1.5 handicap at $1.87 with Bet365.

The Eels should have a newfound confidence coming into this match after scoring 26 points last weekend — their third-highest tally for the 2024 NRL season. And before their horror loss in round 12, Cronulla had scored at least 20 points in four consecutive games. Although Hynes will be out for the visiting side, this should be a high-scoring affair that goes over the total points line of 47.5 ($1.90).

Eels winger Maika Sivo is a try-scoring machine at CommBank Stadium. Since returning to the side in round four, he has tallied a whopping nine tries in six games. The return of Moses will create better opportunities in attack, making Sivo a great shout to follow up last week’s two-try effort with his fourth double of the year ($2.80).
