It’s an all-English affair as Jack Draper takes on Cameron Norrie in the second round of Wimbledon 2024 on Thursday night (AEST).
Since the decline of Andy Murray, Norrie has been the dominant force in British men’s tennis. Just last month, however, a new power emerged, with the 22-year-old Draper becoming the new No.1 in the UK.
Now, the pair clash in front of their home fans in a match that has more than a third-round berth on the line.
Draper came into London in brilliant form. The youngster had long been tipped to be a top 10 contender, but injuries had kept him from stringing together any meaningful results.
The last month, however, he’s been fit, healthy, and causing big names big issues.
First, he won a maiden ATP title in Stuttgart, defeating the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Matteo Berrettini en route to the trophy. Then, he backed up his run with an impressive upset of world No.3 Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s.
Now, Draper is through to the second round of Wimbledon after a steely effort to defeat Swedish qualifier Elias Ymer on Centre Court.
Norrie, on the other hand, has had a challenging year.
The former world No.8 is down at No.42 in the rankings, with a 14-13 win-loss record for the year. His best results have been a round-of-16 run at the Australian Open and a semi-final in Rio de Janeiro, outside of which he’s shown little.
Coming into Wimbledon, the Brit was riding a worrying four-match losing streak on the ATP Tour. He snapped that with a solid three-set win over Facundo Diaz Acosta on Tuesday.

All signs point towards Draper winning this one.
His level has simply been much higher than Norrie’s of late, and there’s no indication that that will change on Thursday. However, this clash will be closer than tennis bookmakers are predicting.
Because Draper and Norrie are compatriots, they’re very familiar with each other’s games. The pair have trained together, played Davis Cup together, and met twice on the ATP Tour.
Given that Norrie has won both of their previous meetings, this familiarity will help level out the gap in form at the moment.
Add in the emotional motivation for Norrie, and this won’t be a walk in the park for Draper.
Norrie will be secretly stinging over all the fresh attention on Draper that has pushed him to the background. He’ll come out fired up and will take at least one set.
