Super Saturday in the NRL continues at 5:30pm with the Brisbane Broncos travelling south to take on the St George Illawarra Dragons at Kogarah.
The Broncos have been in freefall in recent weeks. Losses to the Tigers, Storm and Eels at Suncorp Stadium by big margins appear to have divided the club, players, and coaches.
The Dragons have turned into the club for players and coaches alike unwanted by the Broncos, with forward Aaron Woods stating on radio the former Brisbane players are motivated to be the side that ultimately stops the Broncos from playing in the 2022 NRL finals.
There will need to be many results go the way of the Broncos if they are to make it to this year’s finals, but a big win over the Dragons is all they can do to give them the best opportunity of doing so.
The Dragons have named an unchanged lineup to the one that narrowly beat the Wests Tigers last weekend at CommBank Stadium in Parramatta. Meanwhile, the Broncos have rung in a host of changes in hope of securing a win on Saturday. Delouise Hoeter has come into the centres with Brenko Lee out injured. Forwards Corey Jensen and Kobe Hetherington are also out through injury and have been replaced by Rhys Kennedy and State of Origin star Pat Carrigan, who returns from suspension. Five-eighth Ezra Mam has been dropped to the reserves in favour of Tyson Gamble, while Selwyn Cobbo returns to his wing in place of Jordan Pereira.

The Dragons look to be on an upward trajectory with two wins in a row, while the Broncos have only beaten the Knights in their last five matches. What’s more concerning for the Broncos is that in five trips to Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, they have only won on one occasion. The Broncos have won 24 of their 43 matches against the Dragons, but their last match at Kogarah finished up as a 52-24 belting.
The Broncos will be more than aware of the fact they need a big win to give them any hope of playing finals football in 2022. They are also a vastly different side to the one that played and lost in their last match at this ground. The Broncos should be good enough to come away with a win, and the 13+ margin at $2.85 with Marantelli Bet looks to be the play.
The return of Cobbo to this Broncos side will be much welcomed, as the teenage superstar does an enormous amount of work out of the backfield while being able to produce freakish runs from anywhere on the field to break the game open. What the Dragons and young opposition winger Tyrell Sloan will need to be wary of is his attacking ability in the air. Cobbo has often been the target of cross-field kicks for captain Adam Reynolds, and the two will surely look to link up again Saturday. If not through Reynolds’ kicking game, Cobbo has the talent and power necessary to go through or over any defensive line in front of him. He is more than capable of getting two or more tries in the match, paying $4.
Not only are the Broncos more than capable of piling on the points when they’re at their best, but they do tend to concede them too. Despite the wet weather predicted for Saturday in Sydney, both sides will be looking to throw the ball around and score points to achieve their ultimate goal for the game. Look for this match to exceed the 52.5 total match points for the game as both sides look to attack their way to a win.
Key matchup: Hunt vs Reynolds
The matchup of these two halfbacks will be incredibly interesting to watch, and even more interesting considering the history of Brisbane. After that fateful 2015 NRL Grand Final, Ben Hunt was not viewed as the man to lead the Broncos to premiership glory. He has since turned himself into one of the best attacking and game-managing halfbacks in the NRL. Adam Reynolds is another of those halfbacks, and at points has been hailed the saviour of Brisbane for the noticeable improvement he has brought the Broncos this season.
In wet conditions, kicking games will be at an all-time premium with an emphasis on making life difficult for the opposition to come out of their own end. Though it may not be entirely up to the game management of these two men, one of them could break the game open at any time with a 40/20 kick or a strong run to score that will go a long way to winning the game for their club.
