Wimbledon 2024: Novak Djokovic v Holger Rune preview
No.2 seed Novak Djokovic comes up against former world No.4 Holger Rune in the round of 16 at Wimbledon on Monday in London. The pair have met five times before with a 3-2 head-to-head in Djokovic’s favour, making this a fascinating encounter.
Djokovic comes into the clash having had an uncharacteristically poor year so far. He’s not won a title yet, and has struggled with both injuries and motivation levels.
However, having shown some of his trademark fire and the French Open last month, and now miraculously recovering from knee surgery to make Wimbledon, he’s looking good.
The Serbian has seen off qualifier Vit Kopriva, British wildcard Jacob Fearnley and Australia’s Alexei Popyrin across the opening three rounds of Wimbledon. He’s dropped sets in his last two matches, but overall has been in control, and appears to be building nicely this tournament.
Rune has also not had the year he would have hoped for. The 21-year-old has inarguable levels of talent, but has failed to mature into his game at the same speed as the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
So far in 2024, Rune has bumbled his way to a 25-13 win-loss record. This includes a run to the round of 16 in Paris, plus a handful of Masters 1000 quarter-finals and lower-level semi-finals.
In London the past week, the Dane has fought hard to win his first three matches. He whizzed past Kwon Soon-woo in his opener, before dropping a set to Thiago Seyboth Wild and most recently going the distance against Quentin Halys in the third round.

Djokovic will win this match. However, don’t expect it to be straight forward for the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
Rune has played top five players at Grand Slams on five occasions, and all but once he’s won at least one set. In fact, of the 17 times he’s played against a member of the top five in his career, he’s only lost in straight sets three times.
The 21-year-old almost always rises to the occasion, and puts up a fight when he’s against a high-calibre opponent. If anything, it’s the lesser-ranked players that Rune needs to be worried about.
Looking at the pair’s head-to-head, this trend holds. Rune has defeated Djokovic twice, and in his three losses, has always won a set.
Given both player’s form at this year’s Wimbledon, all signs are pointing towards this being another epic between Djokovic and Rune.
Whether it goes to four or five is something of a coin flip, but back Djokovic to prevail, Rune to win a set and the match to go over 34.5 games for a healthy return with the top online bookmakers.
