Round 14: Cowboys v Warriors match preview

The North Queensland Cowboys and New Zealand Warriors will each be looking to snap the other’s win streak when they meet in Townsville on Saturday evening in round 14 of the NRL Premiership.

The Cowboys secured the most unlikely win last weekend, beating the Roosters by two points at Allianz Stadium. That result elevated them to 10th on the NRL ladder, level on points with eighth-placed Sydney.

The Warriors are coming off the bye and will be determined to keep their streak going after narrow wins over the Dolphins and Panthers. While they sit 13th at the moment, a win in Far North Queensland would put them back in touch with the top eight.

Cowboys coach Todd Payten has named representative stars Valentine Holmes, Murray Taulagi, Tom Dearden, Reece Robson, Jeremiah Nanai, and Reuben Cotter as part of an extended reserves list with the hope they will back up from Wednesday night’s Origin match. Otherwise, the side is unchanged.

Warriors coach Andrew Webster has named Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad (illness), Rocco Berry (hand), Addin Fonua-Blake (stood down), Tohu Harris (wrist) and Kurt Capewell (calf) to return this week. Moala Graham-Taufa, Edward Kosi, Paul Roache, Jacob Laban, and Bunty Afoa have all been dropped, with Jackson Ford named to play in the front row and Marata Niukore in the back row.

North Queensland Cowboys v New Zealand Warriors predictions

Punters appear to have jumped on early prices and backed the Warriors into +135 to win this match — odds that will only shorten with the confirmation of which Cowboys stars will play following State of Origin.

The Warriors have won three of their last five matches against the Cowboys, with one of those wins coming at this ground. Also, the underdog has won in five of the Warriors’ last six matches, while the Cowboys have failed to cover the line in each of their last seven games as favourites. With several stars back in the side for NZ, their head-to-head price with the top NRL bookmakers is great value.
