Collingwood v Port Adelaide R6 match preview
Round six of the 2024 AFL Premiership season continues on Saturday afternoon as the Collingwood Magpies host the Port Adelaide Power at the MCG.
Collingwood had their bye last round, giving them a chance to reflect on their disappointing start to the year. After going 0-3, the Magpies then kicked into gear with consecutive wins against the Lions and Hawks.
Last season the MCG was a fortress for the Magpies, but after losing their first two matches at the ground this season, they no longer seem as imposing in front of their home supporters.
During the week, Collingwood premiership defender Nathan Murphy was forced to retire due to ongoing concussion symptoms. However, in more encouraging news, veteran midfielder Scott Pendlebury is expected to play despite suffering a rib injury against the Hawks before the bye.
Port Adelaide also enter this match on a two-game winning streak after they beat the Fremantle Dockers by three points last Saturday. In a low-scoring affair, the Power trailed for the majority of the second half, but a Jason Horne-Francis goal in the final minutes sealed the four points.
Sitting 4-1, the Power have had an impressive start to the season. Their young midfield group has excelled, while they boast one of the top key-position units in the AFL.
In positive injury news for Port, key defender Brandon Zerk-Thatcher has been cleared after suffering a shoulder injury against the Dockers, while veteran on-baller Travis Boak is expected to return from a back issue.
Collingwood v Port Adelaide AFL predictions
After an underwhelming start to the season, the Magpies have a great opportunity to make a statement against one of the hottest sides in the AFL. While Collingwood’s forward line has struggled, their goalkicking midfielders play a vital role in their attacking game. On form, Port should be too good, but if the Magpies at the MCG can get their high-pressure game going, they will be hard to stop as $1.78 favourites with Bet365.
One Collingwood player who’s had a good start to the year is wingman Josh Daicos. Averaging 25 disposals per game, the All-Australian has picked up where he left off in 2023 as one of the team’s primary ball-movers. He collected a season-high 30 disposals against the Hawks, so back him to continue his good start with 25 or more touches at $1.90 with top AFL bookmakers.
Returning from an ACL injury, Port Adelaide forward Mitch Georgiades has come straight back into form with multiple goals in his two matches. Facing a Pies side that has struggled to deal with key forwards, expect him to slip under the radar as the third tall. At $2.45 to kick two or more goals, Georgiades offers great value to continue his solid return.
