There may not be a greater rivalry in the AFL than Collingwood against Carlton, which reignites at the perfect time this Sunday at the MCG.
The Magpies are coming off a massive victory against the odds last weekend, as they travelled to Western Australia and knocked off the Fremantle Dockers in the wet.
Craig McRae’s young Pies are getting better by the week, but do they have it in them to best a very talented Carlton outfit?
The Blues currently sit third on the AFL ladder with eight wins in their opening 10 matches, as they are clearly playing their best brand of football in recent history.
Neither team will enter this game at full strength, as the Blues are without Coleman Medallist Harry McKay up forward, while the Pies are still without Brodie Grundy in the ruck and Jordan Roughead, who shocked the AFL world with his retirement on Friday morning.
Mason Cox has recovered from his dislocated finger and has been named to play, while Oliver Henry should retain his spot after kicking four goals as the sub in 60% game time.
We think fans of both teams will treat this game with the respect it deserves, so there will be a finals-like intensity and a monster crowd to match.
Key matchup: Jordan De Goey vs Patrick Cripps
Patrick Cripps is currently in a league of his own amongst his midfield peers, as he continues to rack up ridiculous disposal numbers and kick multiple goals each week. Although Jordan De Goey has not been outstanding across the last month, he is one of the few players with the size and strength to match Cripps in the middle.
Both players have the potential to win this match off their own foot, as De Goey did early last year when he slotted four goals against Carlton in round two. Cripps may not be as gifted in the forward half, but he is a much better ball magnet in the middle. Hopefully these two superstars match up together at the stoppages, as it will be a joy to see them both dominate the midfield this week.
Carlton vs Collingwood betting tips
Carlton Blues -9.5
The Western Bulldogs smash the Magpies out of the middle in round nine and that was all she wrote that day, as the advantage out of the centre was too much for the Pies defence to handle. The Blues have just as strong a midfield as the Bulldogs and easily have the skills to create a similar advantage, which will give Charlie Curnow the chance to kick a huge bag on Darcy Moore.
Carlton Blues -9.5
Jamie Elliott 2+ goals
The Pies instantly looked better in the forward half upon the return of Jamie Elliott from his AC joint surgery, despite the veteran not even kicking a goal against the Dockers. Elliott offers both a target in the air and class once the ball hits the deck, which will be a mismatch for the tall Carlton defence. Expect Jamie Elliott to pop up for a couple of creative crumbing goals this Sunday. He is around the $2.10 mark to achieve this feat with Australian online bookmakers.
Jamie Elliott 2+ goals
Same game multi: 3 legs @ $9.73
Patrick Cripps will lead the Blues to a famous victory against a trying young Collingwood outfit this Sunday at the MCG, where Jamie Elliott will kick a couple of majors for the Pies.
Carlton Blues -9.5 / Elliott 2+ goals / Cripps 30+ disposals
