Sunday afternoon AFL sees old rivals Carlton face Collingwood for the first time since last year’s infamous one-point loss in round 23.
The Blues will be out to avenge last year’s defeat which resulted in them missing the finals, while the top of the ladder Magpies will be looking to continue on their winning ways.
Last weekend, the Carlton’s poor form continued as they went down by 20 points to the Western Bulldogs in a low scoring affair.
Coming off a defeat the week before, the Blues were expected to come into the game raring to go, yet instead they were booed off at half-time after only registering one goal. A six-goal surge in the second half saw Carlton ahead midway through the last quarter, but four unanswered goals from the Bulldogs saw them come away with the victory.
Over the last five weeks, the Blues are 1-4, with their sole win coming against the 17th-placed West Coast Eagles. However, one positive throughout this patch has been the form of Sam Walsh. Missing the first four weeks of the season due to injury, the star midfielder has not missed a beat, last week gathering 29 disposals and a goal. If Carlton are going to stop their form slump, they are going to need more players in the midfield to step up.
The Magpies are cruising and sit on top of the ladder with a game in hand over the chasing pack. Last Sunday they made light work of the GWS Giants, winning by 65 points in a game that was never close.
Following two weeks of being tagged, Nick Daicos relished the freedom of playing without a direct opponent, gathering 41 disposals in a dominant display. Playing alongside him, offseason recruit Tom Mitchell also had a great day, collecting 36 disposals in his best performance for the Collingwood so far.
Up forward, it was a collective effort, as the Magpies had seven multiple goal-scorers, none better than the 211cm American Mason Cox. In his most influential game since the 2018 preliminary final, the ruck-forward had a day out, collecting 19 disposals, 24 hit-outs and kicking two goals. His presence around the ground was particularly impressive as he filled the ruck role vacated by the injured Darcy Cameron.
There is a history of bad blood between these sides and this Sunday expect nothing different. Having won seven out of the last eight encounters between the two sides, Collingwood heads into this game as a clear favourite with online bookmakers. Yet in these encounters between traditional Melbourne sides, anything can happen, and the Blues will be hoping to send a message to the competition that they are serious about playing finals. Having lost one game this season, in a round four trip up to Brisbane, the Magpies will come into this game confident and should be too good for the out of touch Blues ($1.45).
Last time these two sides played the Carlton season was on the line needing a win to make finals. Although they fell short by a point, captain Patrick Cripps played one of the most impressive games, as he gathered 35 disposals and 12 clearances, that ultimately won him the Brownlow Medal. Although their season isn’t on the line just yet, there is a very similar feeling surrounding the Blues and a win this weekend seems more important than ever. Elite players stand up in big games and this shapes as the perfect opportunity for Cripps to gather 30 or more disposals paying $2.12 with the top AFL betting sites.
When looking at Collingwood’s forward line, it has been largely a collective effort, but the one player whose form has been particularly impressive is Brody Mihocek. Kicking a career-high five goal haul against the Sydney Swans, the star forward looks in stellar touch. Averaging 2.3 goals a game he will be looking to continue this form against the Blues by kicking two or more goals ($1.53).

Key matchup: Charlie Curnow v Darcy Moore

The battle between two of the best big men in the game, as reigning Coleman medallist Charlie Curnow battles Collingwood captain Darcy Moore, should be fantastic.
Curnow has been outstanding for the Blues this year, averaging more goals per game than last year, and he currently has kicked the second most goals this season. A matchup nightmare, Curnow is elite both on the lead and in the pack, always being a threat on goal whenever he gets the ball around the 50. A competitive Carlton side is always lead by Curnow hitting the scoreboard.
Newly appointed captain for 2023, Moore has taken the role in stride, leading the Collingwood defence each week. An elite intercept player, Moore is excellent at using his size against his direct opponent, whilst also understanding the need to peel off and assist teammates. Moore leads from the front and stopping Curnow would go a long way to securing the Magpies a victory.
