Carlton v Collingwood AFL R8 match preview
Round eight of the 2024 AFL season continues this Friday night with a clash between two of the oldest and fiercest rivals in the AFL as the Carlton Blues host the Collingwood Magpies at the MCG.
Last Saturday, the Blues were dealt their second loss of the season as they fell to Geelong by 13 points. In a high-scoring affair, Carlton dominated periods of the game, but their ball use inside 50 let them down as they had 21 more inside 50s than the Cats.
Despite the loss, there is no major cause for concern for Michael Voss’ side. The Blues sit sixth on the AFL ladder, outside the top four on percentage alone, and remain one of the early premiership fancies at $7 with online bookmakers.
Carlton are also set to regain a few players from their extensive injury list, with Adam Cerra, David Cunningham and Orazio Fantasia all likely to play. As such, the likes of Jaxon Binns, Jack Carroll and Lachie Cowan may find themselves unlucky.
Collingwood played out a famous ANZAC Day draw last Thursday as they finished 85-85 with Essendon. In a match that both teams could have won, the Pies were down by as much as 12 points in the final term before drawing back the margin.
That brings Collingwood’s record to 3-3-1 as one of the hardest teams to gauge this season. They are unbeaten in their past four matches, but with just one convincing win so far, they are understandably underdogs for this clash.
In a potential blow for the Pies, experienced midfield pair Tom Mitchell (foot) and Jordan De Goey (groin) are both in doubt. If either of those two are sidelined, Finlay Macrae will almost certainly return to the side.
Blues v Magpies Rd 8 betting strategy
Rivalry games such as these are often hard to predict. The Blues have been the better side all season, but the reigning premiers are one of the best pressure teams in the AFL and often stop opponents from playing their brand of football. A clear point of difference is Carlton’s superior depth in key positions, so back them to win at $1.78 with Bet365.
Carlton forward Harry McKay is a big part of the club’s key-position dominance. The 2021 Coleman Medal winner has seemingly put his goalkicking struggles behind him, booting 18.9 with multiple goals in all but one game this season. He averages 2.5 goals per game against the Magpies, so expect him to continue his great start with three or more majors at $2.15 with top AFL betting sites.
Playing on the wing for the Magpies, Josh Daicos has been one of their best to start the season. Averaging 23 disposals per game, he excels in uncontested ball movement, with speed and decision-making his key traits. Daicos collected 27 disposals in both meetings with Carlton last season, so back him for 25 or more touches at $1.87 with PlayUp.
