Round 19: Broncos v Dragons match preview

The Brisbane Broncos will be desperate to snap their five-game losing streak when they face the St George Illawarra Dragons at Suncorp Stadium this Saturday in round 19 of the 2024 NRL Premiership.

The Broncos have not won since round 11 in Brisbane. Losses to the Titans, Sharks, Rabbitohs and Warriors threatened to derail their season; however, they were much more impressive in their eight-point loss to the Panthers last weekend, suggesting winning form could be around the corner.

The Dragons are 10th on the NRL ladder, and a win in this match could elevate them back into the top eight. Having beaten the Dolphins, Tigers and Panthers in their last five matches, the club will be confident of springing an upset in Brisbane.

Dragons coach Shane Flanagan will be without State of Origin stars Ben Hunt and Zac Lomax, while Blake Lawrie has been dropped.

Mikaele Ravalawa starts on the wing, Jesse Marschke comes in at halfback, and Raymond Faitala-Mariner (back) returns in the second row. Hame Sele (shoulder) comes back via the bench, alongside Luciano Leilua.

Kevin Walters has been forced to replace Origin stars Reece Walsh, Selwyn Cobbo, Patrick Carrigan and Payne Haas, as well as the injured Jock Madden (hamstring).

Tristan Sailor steps in at fullback, Kotoni Staggs (personal leave) returns at centre, Josh Rogers lines up in the halves, Xavier Willison starts in the front row, Jordan Riki (suspension) is back in the second row, and Tyson Smoothy locks the scrum. Blake Mozer has been added to the bench, and a late change could be made with fears Brendan Piakura has sustained an ankle injury while training with the Maroons.

The Broncos have only won two of their last five matches against the Dragons, but those wins have come at Suncorp Stadium. St George have also lost 14 of their last 15 interstate matches. The Broncos are far too good a side to continue losing in the fashion they have been, and they should be able to secure a much-needed home win at $1.55 odds with top NRL bookmakers.

The Broncos have led at the break in each of their last five wins, while they’ve won the first half in 10 of their last 11 clashes. Those stats suggest Brisbane should be able to complete the half-time/full-time double at $1.91 with Bet365.
