Broncos star Ezra Mam fined amid unclear suspension period
NRL star Ezra Mam has been fined by the Brisbane Broncos, but it still remains unclear how long the 21-year-old will be suspended for.
The Broncos announced on Friday night that they have accepted the sanctions suggested by the NRL last week, after the five-eighth caused a head-on crash that injured a woman and child while under the influence of drugs in October.
These sanctions include a $30,000 fine from the NRL, as well as an additional $90,000 fine imposed by the Broncos and several corrective programs to be attended.
“Whilst we are extremely disappointed that we have been placed in this position, we believe both the NRL and club-imposed penalties adequately reflect the gravity of what’s transpired and should act as a deterrent from this type of risky and anti-social behaviour,” Brisbane CEO Dave Donaghy said.
“Ezra clearly did the wrong thing, but he has taken responsibility for his actions and shown genuine remorse towards those involved.
“He understands the impact this has had on everyone around him, and the game.
“Ezra has taken steps to get his life back on track since this incident and that must continue.
“We have been very clear about that.
“We believe the additional measures in place are important and will go hand in hand with integrating Ezra back into the work underway at the Broncos.”
Following the NRL’s sanctions of Mam last week, it was believed that he would face a nine-week suspension.
However, both the NRL and the Broncos are yet to confirm how long the player’s suspension will be.
The Broncos begin their 2025 campaign against the Sydney Roosters on Thursday, March 6, where NRL bookmakers have them as $1.78 favourites to win.
This comes after a poor 2024 season that ended in a 12th-placed finish, despite rugby league betting sites having Brisbane on the second line of betting to win the title pre-season.
However, bookies are confident in the club’s ability to bounce back in 2025.
Picklebet puts them on just the third line of betting to win the NRL Premiership ($8), behind the Melbourne Storm ($3.75) and Penrith Panthers ($4.75).
