Craig McRae’s Magpies started the 2022 AFL season oozing with potential, yet they could be in for third consecutive loss against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba this Thursday night.
The Pies blew a big lead against the Cats in round three and could not put away the injury-riddled Eagles in round four, but the Lions are also coming off a loss against Geelong and need to regain some form.
Brisbane’s tall duo of Joe Daniher and Daniel McStay have been very impressive as of late, but they could be even more dangerous up forward once Oscar McInerney is free to play following his recent suspension.
A handful of Collingwood Magpies will return to the line-up this week including Taylor Adams and Jordan De Goey, while Jordan Roughead is set for his first game of the season and Nathan Kreuger is also a chance to return.
Nick Daicos was elite in just his fourth senior game last weekend, racking up a game-high 32 touches and setting up plenty of scoring opportunities. Can the young star keep his incredible streak going against the tough Lions’ midfield this week?
One of the most underrated players in the Brisbane Lions midfield is Hugh McCluggage, who gets the job done consistently on the week each week. Although Hugh has not had the best start to this season, he has a favourable matchup with the Pies and should rack up plenty of disposals.
Key matchup: Lachie Neale vs Jordan De Goey
Lachie Neale is back to his incredible best form this year, showing shades of his tremendous 2020 Brownlow Medal winning season. Jordan De Goey may not be at the same level as Neale, but he is just as important to the Magpies’ list as anyone at the club.
De Goey has an interesting record against the Lions, as he loves going forward and kicking goals against their mismatched defence. The powerful Magpie kicked nine goals in two games against Brisbane in 2018 alone, which could be the difference this week against Neale, who is not a known goalkicker.
Brisbane Lions vs Collingwood Magpies betting tips
Collingwood Magpies +29.5
Even though the Pies could not beat the West Coast Eagles last weekend, we think they will get back some firepower this Thursday and give the Lions a run for their money. The last clash between these two sides at the Gabba was a bloodbath in favour of the Lions, but their other 2021 Easter Thursday battle was won by Zac Bailey after the siren, meaning the match could have gone either way.
Collingwood Magpies +29.5
Jordan De Goey to kick 2+ goals
Jordan De Goey has kicked a goal in each of his three matches this season while constantly threatening to kick a bag. The star midfielder is very comfortable in the forward half of the ground and knows where the goals are on a good day. With 11 scoring shots in three matches, De Goey is creating more than enough opportunities to kick multiple goals against the Lions this Thursday.

Lions v Magpies Same game multi
We will still be tipping the Lions to win the match over Collingwood, but we suspect it will go down to the wire. Jordan De Goey should have a big impact in front of goal in his return from suspension, while Hugh McCluggage will get off the chain through the midfield.
Collingwood +29.5 / De Goey 2+ goals / McCluggage 25+ disposals
