Australia vs South Africa match preview – 2023 Cricket World Cup
Below are our Australia v South Africa betting tips and match prediction for their Cricket World Cup clash set to be played at Ekana Sports City on Thursday night AEST.
The Aussies are reeling after being thrashed by World Cup favourite India in their opening clash and now face an in-form Proteas team that dismissed Sri Lanka in impressive fashion in their tournament opener.
Coming up against India in their starting match of the tournament, the Aussies put in a disappointing effort as they fell by six wickets. In a batting performance that never gained momentum. The Aussies struggled to find the tempo during their innings, with wickets falling at regular intervals as they attempted to lift the run rate, but their lack of prowess against the Indians spinners found them out. A strong start with the ball had India at 3-2 early, but poor fielding and a small target saw India cruise home in the end.
Major concerns have arisen regarding the make-up of the Australian side as they struggle to pace themselves when batting. There are also worries surrounding the quality of spin options going forward with favourable conditions expected throughout the tournament and Adam Zampa struggling.
On the other hand, South Africa had the best possible start to the World Cup as they beat Sri Lanka by 102 runs in record breaking fashion. Punishing the Sri Lanka bowling attack, the South Africans had three players reach 100 runs, including Aiden Markram who scored the fastest hundred in World Cup history. As a result, they put together the highest ever World Cup score of 428. Despite an impressive bowling performance, their efforts with the bat saw them get home comfortably in the end.
Despite their impressive win, there are still questions surrounding the South African bowling line-up. Using just five bowlers last game, there is a risk that opposition sides target particular bowlers who have to bowl their full 10 overs.
After being ruled out of their opener due to injury, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis is a chance to return for this match for the out-of-form Cameron Green. Whilst South Africa is expected to keep the same side from their last match.

Australia vs South Africa betting tips
Match Winner
Having won the five-match ODI series 3-2 in the lead-up to the World Cup, South Africa will be confident that they can beat the Aussies once again on Thursday. However, the Aussies have to bounce back to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive. Expect a much-improved batting performance from Australia, who we are backing to win at -138.89 with Neds.
Top Australian Run Scorer
After getting out for a duck against India, Australian opener Mitch Marsh has plenty to prove against South Africa. We are backing him to top score for the Aussies at +350 with top online bookmakers.
Top South African Run Scorer
With the quality of the opening bowlers for Australia, look for the South African top order to struggle. As a result, we are backing the in-form Heinrich Klaasen to top score at +550 with Bet365.
