First T20I preview – Australia v Pakistan
Australia will be determined to bounce back from a disappointing One Day International series loss when they host Pakistan in the first of three T20 Internationals at The Gabba this Thursday.
It was the first time in 22 years that the Aussie men had lost a home ODI series to the Asian nation, and now the hosts will be fighting to ensure they don’t suffer a similar fate in the shorter format.
Even so, Australia head to Brisbane as $1.61 favourites at Bet365, with the visitors paying $2.30 to continue their winning streak.
Josh Inglis will continue to lead the Australian side, with Xavier Bartlett, Tim David, Nathan Ellis and Josh Philippe joining the squad in place of the Test stars who are preparing for the upcoming series against India.
Mohammed Rizwan will continue to lead Pakistan as well, welcoming Abbas Afridi, Jahandad Khan, Omair Yousuf, Sahibzada Farhan, Usman Khan and Sufiyan Muqeem to the side for more options with both bat and ball.
Australia v Pakistan betting predictions
The Australians have lost just three of their last 15 T20I matches, all of which have been played since the 2023-24 summer came to an end. Meanwhile, Pakistan have won seven of their last 14, including a famous tie in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup. Punters should expect a return to winning ways for the Aussies, who are paying $1.61 for the victory with top cricket bookmakers.
Matt Short was a clear standout of the BBL13 season for the Adelaide Strikers, averaging 60.11 as the competition’s leading runscorer. While he has struggled in the ODI format for Australia, he averages just over 25 in T20Is with a much clearer plan of attack. At the top of the order, $4.50 at Unibet is great value for Short to lead the Australian runscoring.
Pakistan seamer Shaheen Shah Afridi has been in solid form this summer, taking eight wickets at less than four runs per over during the ODI series. His fast, swinging bowling style will be well suited to the conditions of The Gabba, and Australian betting sites are paying $3.50 for Shaheen to finish as Pakistan’s top wicket-taker.
