Australia vs England Champions Trophy preview
The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy continues this Saturday as Australia and England kick off their respective campaigns in Lahore.
There are high expectations for both these sides given they are among the tournament favourites with top cricket betting sites. However, both sides will have to overcome poor recent form.
Australia have lost their last four ODIs to Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with the side failing to pass 170 runs in any of the matches.
Similarly, England are coming off a 3-0 sweep to India and a 2-1 series loss to the West Indies, and their bowling has been a major concern.
These sides faced off most recently in ODI cricket in September last year, where Australia won the series 3-2 away from home.
Looking at the Lahore conditions, expect this match to be a run-heavy affair. It is Pakistan’s best batting track, and three out of four innings at the venue in 2025 have cleared 300 runs.
Australia vs England team news – Champions Trophy 2025
With the loss of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis, this Australian squad will be quite inexperienced.
Travis Head and Matt Short will open up, with captain Steve Smith at number three. Expect wicketkeeper duo Josh Inglis and Alex Carey to play stabilising roles through the middle, while Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Hardie provide late hitting options.
With the ball, Nathan Ellis, Sean Abbott and Spencer Johnson are the main pace options, while Adam Zampa is expected to lead the spin attack.

For England, Ben Duckett and wicketkeeper Phil Salt are set to open the batting, with Tom Banton set to come in at number three. Joe Root will anchor the innings at four, followed by hard-hitting options Harry Brook, Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone.
England’s express bowling lineup is set to include Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, with Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton offering other options. Adil Rashid is set to be the main spin option.
Australia vs England betting predictions
It would be a different story if Australia were at full strength, but the loss of so many key players — especially seam bowlers — is set to play a major role. The Aussies were incredibly poor in the recent series in Sri Lanka, and they will need a massive improvement to compete in this competition. England having both Wood and Archer fit is a big boost, while their explosive batting lineup should be too good, so back the underdogs in at $2.10 with BetOnline.
Coming in at the top of the order for Australia, Travis Head looks the greatest threat to the English attack. Known for his performances on the big stage, Head averages 55.87 against England, while he averages 63.33 at a strike rate of 132 in Pakistan. Facing a rapid attack with the field up early, back Head to pass 50 at $2.50 with leading cricket bookmakers.
English leg-spinner Adil Rashid is set to play a vital role through the middle overs of the Australian innings. His ability to deceive the batsman in the air and turn the ball both ways makes him a tough proposition, while he thrives against right-handers — which make up eight of Australia’s lineup. With the Aussies likely to handle the pace well, back Rashid to lead the English attack at $4 with major sports betting sites.
