Are the Dons destined for 2018 obscurity?

Is Essendon destined for another disappointing year? Source: Essendon Facebook.

ESSENDON started the season as a dark horse for the 2018 AFL Premiership, but after a poor start to the season the punters have turned their backs on the Bombers.

The Dons slumped to a 2-5 record this year after yet another toothless performance on Saturday, this time against the Hawthorn Hawks at the MCG.

The loss leaves Essendon languishing in 15th position on the ladder and at triple figures ($101 at online bookmaker Sportsbet) for the 2018 AFL premiership.

The Bombers are at unbackable odds of $1.02 to miss the eight and sit at double figures ($11 at Crownbet) for the first-time this year to make the eight.

Experienced on-baller David Myers told EssendonFC.com.au that the team is committed to turning the club’s fortunes around.

“We’ll go back to the drawing board during the week,” Myers said.

“We’ll have a lot of hard conversations again and we won’t shy away from what we’ve been serving up. And we’ll crack in again during the week and try to improve as a collective and we’ll definitely be trying to put our best foot forward again next weekend.

“That’s all you can do, you’ve just got to keep working hard and trust in each other and hope it will turn.”

Myers’ sentiments were echoed by senior coach John Worsfold, who said the team’s poor form this season was not due to a lack of effort.

“There’s not much more we can do, but we can do stuff. We tried a couple of different things today, subtly different,” Worsford said during his post-match press conference.

“I don’t think that worked.

“Ultimately we’ve got to play better footy generally, because our first half, the boys were having a crack at it, they were trying their hearts out, but it still wasn’t great footy.”

Essendon’s next match is against fellow strugglers the Carlton Blues on Saturday afternoon at the MCG, where the Dons are the $1.25 favourites at online bookmaker Ladbrokes.
