All Blacks’ Scott Barrett cleared for World Cup opener after red card controversy
Scott Barrett, New Zealand All Black’s lock has been given the clear without any penalties after receiving a red card during their recent 35-7 loss against South Africa at Twickenham.
Barrett was shown two cards, resulting in his dismissal from the game.
The second card was issued before halftime due to a ruck infringement against Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx.
Despite being reviewed by officials, the incident did not warrant a card.An independent judicial committee ruled that the red card itself was punishment.
They acknowledged that the first yellow card was for an offense following a team warning and the second had mitigating circumstances as Barretts initial contact with Marx was on his arm before rising to his neck area.
The committee also took into account Barrett’s admission of guilt and remorse.Barrett remains eligible to play in New Zealands Rugby World Cup opener against France on September 8.
This decision comes as a relief for the All Blacks as they are already facing a shortage of locks in their squad for the tournament.
With four locks named in the squad and Brodie Retallick recovering in time for the match, Barrett’s clearance is crucial. The selection of head coach Ian Foster’s squad raised concerns due to lock options.
With Barrett available, some of that pressure is alleviated. The All Blacks are determined to recover from their defeat against South Africa and kick off the World Cup campaign with a bang.
