US Open 2024: Alcaraz vs Tu preview
Four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz gets his US Open campaign underway this Tuesday in New York with a clash against qualifier Li Tu of Australia.
The Aussie has battled his way through qualifying with three solid wins, and now faces the biggest match of his life against Alcaraz in his second-ever Grand Slam appearance.
For Alcaraz, it’s been a strange last few months.
The Spaniard dominated from late May to early July, picking up the channel double with titles at the French Open and Wimbledon.
He was particularly impressive in London, dismantling 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the final.
Since then, however, question marks have arisen over Alcaraz.
The 21-year-old lost a rematch against Djokovic at the Paris Olympics in straight sets before losing his first-round match against Gael Monfils in Cincinnati.
This puts him on a two-match losing streak, combined with a recent ankle twist in New York and a few concerning mental signs in his loss to Monfils; the result it’s not quite so clear cut.
For Tu, he has punched above his weight to qualify for the US Open main draw.
The Australian has tried qualifying for majors six times previously without success, but managed to beat three top 150 players in a row to make it this time.
His defeat of Jesper de Jong – who took a set from Alcaraz at Wimbledon – was particularly impressive.
However, he is still ranked No.188 in the world and is an enormous underdog, coming up against the world No.3 on Wednesday.

US Open 2024: Alcaraz v Tu betting predictions
We are backing Alcaraz to win this match in straight sets, naturally. However, there are still a few angles that can produce profit, despite how one-sided this match-up is. Bet365 is offering $2.10 for over 25.5 games, which is an excellent bet, alongside the first set going beyond 10.5 games ($9).
Three factors play into this: Tu coming through qualifying, Alcaraz’s inactivity this month, and his recent ankle twist.
Whenever a player comes through qualifying, it is a tricky one. On the one hand, they are outside the world’s top 100 for a reason. On the other hand, they have just won three matches in a row, have momentum, and are used to the conditions. With Alcaraz playing just one match so far in August – a loss – it would be no surprise if the Spaniard starts slow on Tuesday.
Throw in some hesitation to not push his ankle in a match that he knows he can win without too much effort, and it would not be a surprise to see the first set go 7-5. Remember, Alcaraz dropped a set to a qualifier at the last Grand Slam.
