Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz v Frances Tiafoe preview
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and charismatic world No.29 Frances Tiafoe square off in what could be a highly entertaining third-round match at Wimbledon on Friday.
The pair have met twice before, sharing the honours. Most recently, they clashed in a four-hour, 20-minute epic in the semi-finals of the US Open, with Alcaraz emerging victorious.
The Spaniard comes to Wimbledon looking to defend the title he won last year. His grass season got off to a rocky start when he fell early in his Queen’s title defence at the hands of Jack Draper.
However, back on the lawns of SW19, the world No.3 looks to be in his flow. Across the opening two rounds, the 21-year-old is yet to drop a set, first seeing off Mark Lajal 7-6 (3), 7-5, 6-2, then dismissing Aleksandar Vukic 7-6 (5), 6-2, 6-2.
Prevail at Wimbledon, and Alcaraz would lift back-to-back Grand Slams for the first time in his career. Just last month, he claimed his third major when he saluted at the French Open.
Tiafoe, on the other hand, has had a forgettable season. He put it bluntly in a recent press conference, saying:
“Literally this week last year I was No.10 in the world and now I’m barely seeded here [at Wimbledon]. [I’ve been] losing to clowns.”
While the American could have put things more tactfully, his point stands. His win-loss record of 13-14 coming into Wimbledon makes for grim reading.
He’ll take some solace from a gritty showing so far this week in London, however.
The 26-year-old came back from two sets to love down against Matteo Arnaldi before beating Borna Coric in straight sets to book his spot in the third round.

Often, this works against him, as he struggles to get up for everyday matches.
