AFL 2020 Betting Update: New Rising Star favourite emerges
Seven rounds into the 2020 AFL season, the key futures markets are starting to take on a recognisable shape.
Premiership odds have fluctuated wildly since the restart, but we can now confidently say the major contenders have emerged.
Here are the latest prices and trends in the top AFL 2020 futures betting markets, with odds provided by Sportsbet.com.au.
Brisbane Lions go top of AFL Premiership betting
Five teams are battling for top spot in the latest 2020 AFL outright odds, as only a dollar separates the market-leading Brisbane Lions from Richmond, Collingwood, Port Adelaide and the West Coast Eagles.
A strong win over the Bombers last weekend put the Western Bulldogs back into the finals race at $21, but they need to be more potent inside 50 before we consider them a premiership threat.
The GWS Giants have slid from the top of the market to the sixth line of betting at $12, with their ruck stocks becoming a serious issue in a season where the big men are proving especially influential.
Simon Goodwin’s Demons have underachieved in the past two seasons, but they have shortened to $34 with their impressive win over Hawthorn and could be peaking for their clash with the Lions in round eight.
Keep an eye on Sunday’s clashes featuring the Eagles and Magpies, as the results from those games could shape the market heading into round nine.
2020 AFL Premiership odds
$7 – Brisbane Lions
$7.50 – Richmond
$8 – Collingwood, Port Adelaide, West Coast Eagles
$12 – GWS Giants
$15 – Geelong
$21 – Western Bulldogs
$23 – St Kilda
$26 – Essendon
$34 – Melbourne
$51 – Carlton
$67 – Gold Coast Suns, Hawthorn
$251 – Fremantle, Sydney Swans, North Melbourne
$501 – Adelaide Crows
Petracca making waves in Brownlow Medal betting
There are a few points to unpack within the 2020 Brownlow Medal betting market, mainly revolving around who can compete with Lachie Neale if his form continues.
Not only has Neale had the most disposals in the competition, he also has kicked the most goals out of all the midfielders, which really makes a difference when the umpires tally their votes.
Patrick Cripps should be polling well given the Blues are winning more matches this season, but a lingering shoulder problem could continue to hinder the Carlton captain over the next few weeks.
Christian Petracca is the big mover after seven rounds, as his stunning form in 2020 could translate into a mountain of votes if the Dees can keep putting wins on the board.
As things stand, however, this is Neale’s award to lose.
2020 Brownlow Medal odds
$2.75 – Lachie Neale
$8 – Patrick Dangerfield
$11 – Patrick Cripps
$12 – Marcus Bontempelli
$15 – Brodie Grundy, Christian Petracca
$17 – Travis Boak
$23 – Max Gawn, Scott Pendlebury
$26 – Adam Treloar, Dustin Martin, Nat Fyfe
$34 – Tim Kelly

Rankine bolts into AFL Rising Star favouritism
If Rankine hadn’t missed the entire 2019 season through injury, he may already have won the AFL Rising Star by now.
The Gold Coast Suns jet has taken just two games to bolt into outright favouritism for this year’s award and will be tough to chase down if he stays fit.
Cody Weightman made an impressive debut for the Western Bulldogs, booting a super goal with his first kick in the 42-point win over Essendon.
Keep you eye on Gold Coast wingman Noah Anderson, who runs all day and doesn’t take a backwards step.
He should receive his Rising Star nomination any day now, which would give the Suns three contenders with the injured Matt Rowell still in the mix at $17.
2020 Rising Star odds
$2.50 – Izak Rankine
$3.25 – Max King
$13 – Noah Anderson
$15 – Caleb Serong, Tom Green
$17 – Cody Weightman, Jack Ross, Matthew Rowell, Thomas Berry
$19 – Curtis Taylor
$21 – Hayden McClean, Jackson Hately, Laitham Vandermeer, Will Day
All Charlies and Camerons in Coleman Medal betting
The Brownlow Medal has become a race for second and some online bookmakers went early in paying out on Matt Rowell for the Rising Star, but the Coleman Medal still remains a mystery.
Goals have not always been easy to come by in 2020, but some of the game’s leading small forwards have flourished where the big men have struggled.
The likes of Tom Papley, Charlie Cameron and Dan Butler have had an enormous impact since the restart, with Papley kicking more than a quarter of the Sydney Swans’ goals this season.
Charlie Dixon’s kicking could have been better in the past three rounds, yet the Port Adelaide star is the joint leader with 15 goals and tops the betting at $4.
Poor conversion has also hurt the likes of Tom Lynch, Tom Hawkins and Josh Kennedy, so it will be interesting if they can straighten up and chase down the leaders in the remaining 10 rounds.
2020 Coleman Medal odds
$4 – Charlie Dixon
$6.50 – Charlie Cameron, Jeremy Cameron
$7.50 – Tom Lynch (Richmond)
$8 – Josh Kennedy (West Coast), Tom Papley
$12 – Tom Hawkins
$17 – Brody Mihocek
$19 – Ben King
$23 – Ben Brown
$26 – Dan Butler, Jeremy Finlayson
