The Crows will enjoy a return to home soil when they host the Tigers at Adelaide Oval this Saturday in round two of the 2023 AFL Premiership.
Both sides were competitive in the opening round; the Adelaide Crows went down to the Giants by 16 points, and the Tigers playing out a nail-biting draw against Carlton.
The Crows ran out of puff against the Giants after leading by 29 points in the third quarter. They did look much improved from a disappointing 2022 season and will be buoyed by the strong showing.
Adelaide’s list is studded with young talent, and they are building a well-balanced squad. Their forward line looks especially potent, and we are expecting the Crows to surprise some opponents during the 2023 campaign.
Richmond played out a bizarre, low-scoring draw in round one after booting a goal in the final seconds of the match to square the scoreboard. The Tigers were nowhere near their best and went long periods without impacting the scoreboard, with only a third-quarter flurry keeping them in the contest.
This type of rust can be a factor in the early rounds of any sporting competition, and Richmond are still favoured to make the eight and play a role in September action.
Key matchup: Izak Rankine v Maurice Rioli
Adelaide small forward Izak Rankine looked solid in his opening match for his new club, with only goalkicking inaccuracy preventing him from a match-winning performance. Rankine kicked 2.5 while scooping 18 disposals, six marks, and one tackle. The Adelaide forward line will soon shape up as one of the most formidable in the competition, led by veteran Taylor Walker with support coming from Darcy Fogarty, brilliant youngster Josh Rachele, and the mercurial Rankine.
Richmond small forward Maurice Rioli kicked 2.0 in round one, working effectively at the feet of Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt. The 20-year-old is lightning quick with a goal-sneak mentality. He can swoop on a loose ball and snap a goal in the blink of an eye. Rioli can go missing for portions and needs to work on maintaining his intensity levels, but small forwards play an increasingly important role in the modern AFL set-up.
Adelaide v Richmond AFL Rd 2 betting strategy
We have high hopes for Adelaide’s young side in 2023. They are destined to trouble many fancied teams who travel to South Australia. They showed enough in round one and we are tipping them to get the win here. For those looking for a little insurance, take them at the 8.5-point line, but we are backing them straight-up.
