A-League Round 5 betting tips, top odds & best value bets
After some wild upsets in round four of the 2022-23 A-League season, we are expecting a return to normalcy with class prevailing this weekend. The pick of the round’s action is a game between the Wellington Phoenix and Macarthur FC — two teams that are travelling much better than results might suggest. Read on for a breakdown of all the action, including our best bets.
Melbourne Victory vs Newcastle Jets
Friday, November 4 — 7:45pm AEDT
AAMI Park, Melbourne
The Victory ($1.72) travelled north to Moreton in round four, where they eked out a dull and disappointing 0-0 draw. The early silverware favourites now sit a disappointing eighth on the ladder with a single win to their credit. Victory goals have been hard to come by, with just three successful strikes in four games, and pressure is mounting for an attacking, aggressive response to poor results.
Newcastle ($4.33) are also coming off a disappointing result, as they were soundly beaten 2-0 by Wanderers. The Jets’ failure to find the back of the net saw second-half frustrations mount and three yellow cards produced. Newcastle still sit fourth on the ladder with a game in hand, so there is no reason to panic just yet following one lacklustre effort.
Melbourne Victory to win
Melbourne City vs Perth Glory
Saturday, November 5 — 5pm AEDT
AAMI Park, Melbourne
After going two goals clear at halftime, Melbourne City ($1.36) somehow managed to stumble to a 2-2 draw against the Phoenix, who were massive underdogs before kickoff. Live traders who picked this unlikely comeback are now free-rolling the rest of the season. City get a big chance to restore confidence here against a side that is expected to struggle on the road.
Perth Glory ($7.50) were brave in defeat in round four, going down 2-1 to Adelaide at Hindmarsh. Perth were two goals down after 22 minutes but made the contest interesting with a 32nd-minute strike of their own. The second half played out as a 45-minute stalemate and the Glory will be emboldened by this gutsy effort away from home. They face another tough assignment on the road here.
Melbourne City -1
Western Sydney Wanderers vs Central Coast Mariners
Saturday, November 5 — 7:45pm AEDT
CommBank Stadium, Parramatta
Western Sydney ($1.91) looked polished and composed in their 2-0 victory over the Jets in round four. Wanderers played with attacking flair and might have scored another goal or two in the dying minutes of the game. Western Sydney now share top ladder position with Melbourne City, having conceded a single goal to date. They will be looking to keep the good form rolling in this fixture.
The Central Coast ($3.60) attacking division had a day out against Western United in their latest outing, slamming home four goals between the 67th and 88th minutes. The goals were required after the Mariners trailed 0-2 at halftime. This hot-and-cold approach is the stuff of coaching headaches, but premiership points count nonetheless, and the Mariners currently sit seventh of the ladder with a game in hand.
Over 2.5 total goals
Wellington Phoenix vs Macarthur FC
Sunday, November 6 — 3pm NZDT
Sky Stadium, Wellington
After all hope appeared lost, trailing by two goals deep in the second half, the Phoenix ($2.10) managed to rise from the ashes with some late magic against Melbourne City in round four. Goals in the 79th and 90th minutes secured the unlikely 2-2 draw against the table-toppers and should have filled the Wellington squad with a priceless confidence boost. Back on home turf, they will be looking to keep the goals rolling in.
Macarthur ($3.20) were desperately unlucky in round four when a series of refereeing calls went against them in their 2-3 loss to Sydney. A soft early penalty in the 14th minute resulted in a successful Sydney spot-kick, and a dubious red card in the 37th minute all but ended Macarthur’s winning hopes. They fought bravely until the final whistle and should draw character from the undeserved outcome.
Macarthur FC draw no bet
Brisbane Roar vs Sydney FC
Sunday, November 6 — 2pm AEST
Moreton Daily Stadium, Redcliffe
The Roar ($2.87) were brave in round four, grinding out a 0-0 result against the Victory. Brisbane went a man down after their goalie incurred a red card in the 55th minute, but they kept fighting until the final whistle. Brisbane are still winless for the season but show signs of improvement and will be hopeful of climbing off the bottom of the ladder. They have scored only a single goal in four appearances, so this is the area that must addressed if they are to pose a threat to their rivals.
With the ref on their side, Sydney ($2.25) stole the points in round four and now sit outright third on the table. Scoring goals has not been a problem for Steve Corica’s boys, who have slotted 10 of them to date. This impressive stat shrinks somewhat when we look at their defensive efforts, with the backline leaking eight goals to date. If they can tighten up their structures behind the ball, Sydney might be in for a big year.
Sydney FC to win
Western United vs Adelaide United
Sunday, November 6 — 5pm AEDT
AAMI Park, Melbourne
Western United ($2.37) looked like world beaters for 45 minutes against the Mariners in round four and led by a comfortable two goals at the break. This advantage evaporated in the second stanza, when they conceded an embarrassing four goals. Their chances were hampered by a red card in the 48th minute, after which they appeared disorganised and demoralised. With 11 men on the park, they may have found a way to protect their early lead and emerge with the premiership points.
Adelaide United ($2.62) secured their first win of the season in round four with a hard-fought 2-1 result over the Glory. Early goals in the 18th and 22nd minutes were enough to hold out a persistent Perth side and should lift Adelaide spirits. Scoring has not been an issue, but the Reds need to improve their defence if they hope to mount a season-long challenge.
