A-League R2 best bets

The A-League continues this weekend with the second round of the 2022/23 season. These are our best bets for all six games on the schedule.

Brisbane Roar v Melbourne City

Friday, October 14 – 7:45pm AEDT – Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

The Roar looked somewhat lacklustre in the opening round and failed to find the net across 90 minutes of play. Chances were squandered by both the Roar and Macarthur, and coach Warren Moon will be expecting more flair from his squad going into round two. Debutant Charlie Austin appeared the Roar’s most dangerous player and the Englishman might prove to be a promising signing.

City kicked off their campaign with a solid opening display over Western United. The 2-1 result may have flattered Melbourne slightly, but they will take plenty of confidence out of the performance. They did appear to tire late in the match conceding a late goal, but this understandable following a long break.

Winning form is good form, and we are sticking with Melbourne City to grab the spoils here at $2.10.

Newcastle Jets v Perth Glory

Saturday, October 15 – 5pm AEDT – McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

With their opening fixture postponed because soccer cannot be played underwater, Newcastle have yet to show us their new season wares. Internal confidence is high however, and they are expecting to open their account with a strong home effort against the Glory should the weather cooperate.

Perth travelled to Western Sydney for round one and put up a credible performance when unfancied by betting markets. With the run under their belt, they should be improved again, and we expect them to outperform their current big price.

Perth Glory +0.5 goals is the tip at $2.24.

Melbourne Victory v Western Sydney Wanderers

Saturday, October 15 – 7:45pm AEDT – AAMI Park, Melbourne

The Victory’s attacking prowess was on full display when they put three goals into the net against Sydney. Nicolas D’Agostino threatened throughout and landed the first blow, with Chris Ikonomidis, and Joshua Brillante following up the good work. Fans love goals and Victory will continue to grow their supporter base if they stick with their positive strategy.

The Wanderers were relieved to grab the points against Perth with a single late goal. The match was scrappy in spots, and Western Sydney should be improved for the run. Victory at home might just be one of the hardest fixtures this year though and we expect them to be thoroughly tested in this fixture.

Melbourne Victory is the strong tip at $1.80.

Wellington Phoenix v Central Coast Mariners

Sunday, October 16 – 3pm NZDT – Sky Stadium, Wellington

The Phoenix split the points with Adelaide in round one and will be looking to build on that performance here. While external expectations are low, Wellington might surprise some more fancied rivals on their beloved home turf. They appear to have built a sound defensive structure that might prove hard to break down as the season rolls on.

Despite their name, the Mariners failed to take the field in round one due to the pitch resembling an ocean. We did favour them strongly to beat the Jets in that fixture, but they travel to Wellington for this game which can be a tricky proposition. That said, we are expecting them to put up a competitive opening performance.

We are backing Central Coast on the Draw No Bet market at $2.03.

Macarthur FC v Adelaide United

Sunday, October 16 – 3pm AEDT – Campbelltown Stadium, Campbelltown

Macarthur played the other side of the less than sparkling draw against the Roar, and we are adopting a wait and see approach to their season’s chances. Betting markets might be treating their chances a little too generously at this point. If they suddenly start pounding the back of the net, we will be happy to reassess their premiership chances.

Adelaide emerged from the dreaded Wellington road trip with a valuable point courtesy of a very late goal from Ben Halloran. This last gasp equaliser should lift their confidence going into round two where they are a real chance of accumulating more away points.

We are tipping Adelaide in the Draw No Bet market at what appear juicy odds of $2.06.

Western United v Sydney FC

Sunday, October 16 – 5pm AEDT – AAMI Park, Melbourne

Western United put up a solid effort away to Melbourne City in round one and will be confident they can knock over their cross-town rivals in round two. United appeared to improve as the game progressed and super-sub Nicolas Milanovic grabbed an extra-time goal as reward for their efforts. John Aloisi’s boys will be looking to keep clean shirts and a clean sheet here in expected muddy conditions.

Sydney looked competitive versus Melbourne Victory in round one, finding the back of the net twice to push the visitors all the way to the final whistle. Steve Corica’s charges will be keen to maintain the attacking mindset as the season unfolds, although this fixture should be played at a different tempo to the Victory match-up. We are unlikely to see five goals scored in this contest.

We are confidently tipping Western United on the Draw No Bet market at $2.02.
