2021 Brownlow Medal betting preview & market update
The 2021 AFL Finals Series has been put on the back burner this weekend, giving us the opportunity to turn our attention towards Brownlow Medal night on Sunday, September 19.
A majority of the recent Brownlow Medal counts have seen a red-hot favourite finish the night with ‘Charlie’ around their neck, but this year’s winner is far from predictable.
The shortest odds in the Brownlow market at Sportsbet.com.au belong to Port Adelaide bull Ollie Wines ($3), who jumped into favouritism after closing out the home-and-away season in excellent form.
Marcus Bontempelli follows Wines at $3.75 after another excellent season for the Western Bulldogs, but the skipper might struggle to pick up votes at the backend of the year, which could be costly.
Rounding out the top three is Melbourne’s Clayton Oliver ($4), who has grown into one of the league’s most damaging centremen and is a popular choice amongst punters.
Jack Steele ($8) and Christian Petracca ($13) are the next two players in this year’s market, and we think the St Kilda captain is a very good chance to finish atop the pile.
This year’s Brownlow Medal count is shaping to be one of the tightest in recent years, so there might be some value in backing a smokey.
Sam Walsh ($18) was a clear standout in an ordinary Carlton side, while Darcy Parish ($26) produced a number of three-vote displays in a breakout season at Essendon.
Bontempelli grabs most of the headlines at the Kennel, but perhaps the unerring consistency of Jack Macrae ($41) will be rewarded this year?
2021 Brownlow Medal odds
Jack Steele offers the best value amongst the top four candidates in the 2021 Brownlow Medal betting market. The St Kilda skipper has laid more tackles than any other player this season while also collecting plenty of disposals and hitting the scoreboard. Clayton Oliver is our next pick of the bunch, as the Demons’ fruitful season has provided the powerful midfielder with plenty of opportunities to poll votes. The 2021 Brownlow Medal could easily be won by any of this year’s top contenders, which makes it one of the most exciting counts in recent memory.
