2018 Brownlow Medal betting, favourites, dark horses & multi tips
THE AFL‘s most prestigious individual award is also one of the most popular punting events on the Australian sporting calendar.
The Brownlow Medal is steeped in history and has some of the name’s greatest names attached to it.
After reaching the crescendo of the 2018 home and away season, we’re able to look back over 23 completed rounds and see where the value lies in picking a winner.
This year’s Brownlow market is an interesting one. Hawthorn‘s Tom Mitchell is a raging favourite at $1.60, followed by Dustin Martin, Patrick Cripps, Max Gawn and Dayne Beams — all in the top five in betting.
The top 5 in 2018 Brownlow Medal betting
Back in January this season, Mitchell was valued at a whopping $14.00, but after multiple 50 disposal matches, one of which being the most disposals ever recorded with 54, the ball-magnet’s odds dropped drastically.
Dustin Martin – $7
Last year’s Brownlow Medallist, Dustin Martin, has made his way into the betting after backing up his brilliant 2017 season with another solid campaign.
Many would argue that this year was a substantial drop off from his last, but we know Martin is a proven vote-winner and given his side won 18 games, he will have every opportunity to gain votes. The $7.00 would suggest that the medal is within his grasp and a player that cannot be ignored.
Patrick Cripps – $7
Patrick Cripps may play for a side that won a mere two matches for the entire season, but he is still a genuine chance valued at $7.00. Considering Cripps was originally worth $34.00 in January, it is a mighty accomplishment to be rated so highly by the bookmakers. The fact that Carlton lost a majority of its matches hurts Cripps chances — we suggest avoiding him, he’ll have little opportunity to ever poll a three-vote match.
The Coaches’ Player of the Year, Max Gawn had an outstanding season in the ruck for the Demons. The coaches recognised Gawn’s outstanding ability each week as he continued to poll votes. The result could be very similar come Brownlow night if the umpires were on a similar page to the coaches, and at $8.00, it is great value.
Dayne Beams – $12
Surprisingly, the player that rounds off the top five is Dayne Beams. Beams played all bar one match this season and was named in the best on a number of occasions due to his ability to rack up disposals and effect the scoreboard. The bookmakers rate his efforts have him at $12 to take home the award. Beams is another we see falling victim to his club’s lack of success.

2018 Brownlow Medal dark horses
Some players were stiff not to register in the top five of betting after outstanding seasons. Here are the dark horses we think you should keep a close eye on.
The Collingwood ruckman has taken his footy to the next level in 2018, becoming one of the game’s best players. No ruckman, including Max Gawn, gets more disposals and contested possessions than Grundy, who still has instinctive ruck-work and forward craft. Being under the umpires’ nose at every centre bounce gives Brodie an advantage as he is always in the umpires’ field of vision, which is sure to catch their attention.
Clayton Oliver @ $21.00
Oliver is the best player in the competition under the age of 22, in terms of stats and overall impact on the match. This season was his best and he is a huge chance to poll votes on Brownlow night. Oliver’s work in-close and his lack of competition within the Melbourne side are key factors. He provides value, if the umpires have taken notice.
Elliot Yeo @ $34.00
One of the best players in the Eagles’ incredible 2018 campaign has been utility extroadinare, Elliot Yeo. The hard-working midfielder has become one of the league’s finer competitors. Yeo runs with the footy and hits the scoreboard — traits that former Brownlow winners possess.
Stephen Coniglio @ $67.00
Do not be frightened by the $67.00, as the odds only rise from here. Coniglio may consider himself the most unlucky of those not to make the 40-man All Australian squad during the week, but we haven’t ignored his consistent season. While the GWS midfielder may not be a match-winner, he is a consistent ball-winner, huge runner and carried his side through an injury crisis. It’ll be interesting to see how he polls.
Jack Riewoldt @ $1001.00
If you really are feeling feisty at this years’ Brownlow night, the Coleman Medallist is the best player rated at $1001.00. Riewoldt was best afield in multiple matches in 2018. Some games were he kicked a bag, there was no clear dominating midfielder, meaning he would often land himself in the votes. If you believe the umpires love the Tigers, this is the tip for you.
