Zverev defeats Shelton to win Munich Open | ATP 2025 final

Alexander Zverev - Australian Open

German tennis player Alexander Zverev defeated Ben Shelton to win the Munich Open in Germany on Sunday, racing past the American in just over an hour to reclaim second place in the ATP rankings

The 28-year-old had been going through a poor spell of form heading into the ATP 500 tournament but found some of his best tennis in front of home fans this week to enter the final as a $1.20 leading bookmakers.

While Shelton had been finding his feet on the clay in Munich with several good wins, he was unable to withstand Zverev’s metronomic serving and rock-solid backhand, losing 6-2, 6-4.

“I definitely knew I had to play my best tennis today,” Zverev said after the match.

“Ben has been playing extremely well this week.

“The conditions suit him extremely well, it’s very hot and very fast.

“They suit me as well, to be fair.

“It’s extremely special, I always love winning tournaments in Germany.

“It’s probably the most special thing I can do.”

The German was close to untouchable on serve, making 77% of first serves and dropping just four points all match behind the shot.

He broke Shelton’s serve on three occasions, while denying his opponent any break points across the one-hour, 11-minute clash.

“I was trying as hard as I could to return your serves today, but I couldn’t make it work,” Shelton said.

Despite the loss, Shelton advances up the ATP rankings to No.13 in the world, one spot short of his career high.

Zverev, meanwhile, displaces Carlos Alcaraz as the new world No.2, having dropped down earlier this month after the Spaniard won the Monte-Carlos Masters.

He also firms his odds heading into the 2025 French Open, with the former finalist holding the fourth line of betting at BetOnline ($8.50).

Alcaraz ($2), Jannik Sinner ($3.50) and Novak Djokovic ($7) lead the betting across tennis bookmakers
