Zac Lomax’s NRL future unclear as Dragons confirm 2024 departure
Zac Lomax’s future in the NRL post-2024 is up in the air following the St George Illawarra Dragons’ announcement of his departure at the end of the 2024 NRL season.
Despite signing an extension until 2026, both parties have decided to part ways.
“This move clears things up for Zac and the club, allowing us to plan ahead for seasons,” stated Dragons CEO Ryan Webb.
“It gives us room to refine our team roster and manage our budget while Zac can look towards his next chapter.”
Lomax’s dissatisfaction reportedly arose from Shane Flanagan moving him to the wing to accommodate Jack Bird’s return to the centres.
The 24-year-old, who has mainly played as a centre in his 97-game NRL career, was surprised by this change since a shift to fullback never materialised.
Despite his solid performance at the start of the season in his wing role, Lomax and his management sought an early release several times, ultimately leading to his anticipated exit from the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2025.
Will Parramatta Eels sign Zac Lomax?
The Parramatta Eels have emerged as suitors for Lomax due to their need for depth in their backline.
Only Will Penisini and Maika Sivo are regular starters under Brad Arthur, with Bailey Simonsson facing injury setbacks.
Lomax’s addition would strengthen Parramatta’s backline, offering a threat in the air and complementing Mitch Moses’ precise kicking skills.
While he has only scored more than 10 tries in a season once, his ability to offload and break tackles consistently results in around eight try assists per year.
Will Sydney Roosters sign Zac Lomax?
The Sydney Roosters, facing changes to their roster, could also be a landing spot for Lomax.
With Jared Waerea-Hargreaves leaving and Joseph Suaalii and Joey Manu likely to depart, the team is lacking centre options beyond Billy Smith.
Angus Crichton potentially leaving also opens up salary cap space for the Roosters to pursue Lomax in 2025.
Will Canberra Raiders sign Zac Lomax?
The Canberra Raiders, unexpectedly sitting as a strong contender in the NRL ladder this year, provide another choice.
Despite their attacking prowess, the Green Machine boasts a strong centre pairing in Matt Timoko and Seb Kris.
However, Canberra might entice Lomax by offering him a chance to play at fullback — position he has shown interest in playing.
Ricky Stuart’s changing lineup could give Lomax the opportunity he craves.
