The opening stop of the World Surf League (WSL) 2025 Championship Tour (CT), delivered a historic day of competition as the men’s Round of 32 and Round of 16 ran in incredible six-to-eight-foot waves at the Lexus Pipe Pro.
Heavy barrels at Pipeline and Backdoor produced some of the most thrilling action of the event so far, with Finals Day now locked in for Sunday, February 9 (AEDT). The first call is set for 4:45am AEDT for a possible 5:03am start.
A full day of high-stakes competition saw 12 excellent-range scores (8.00-10.00), including two Perfect 10-point rides from defending event winner Barron Mamiya (HAW) and 2023 champion Jack Robinson (AUS).
Reigning World Champion John John Florence (HAW) was eliminated in a dramatic rematch of the 2024 Final, falling to Mamiya in a blockbuster Round of 16 showdown.

Kelly Slater (USA), an 11-time World Champion and eight-time winner at Pipeline, achieved his 100th CT heat win at the iconic break today.
Competing as a wildcard, Slater secured his milestone victory in the Round of 32, overcoming Indonesia’s Rio Waida (INA) in their first-ever head-to-head match-up.
The 52-year-old then dominated his Round of 16 heat against Ethan Ewing (AUS), posting a 9.33 for a deep Backdoor barrel to secure a place in the Quarterfinals for the 27th time.
“This is what we live for at a Pipe event,” Slater said.
“It just sends it to another realm. It’s actually hard to calm down for a heat. I don’t know if I was nervous or anxious or what, but I couldn’t calm my heartbeat down out there because I was just so excited.”
Mamiya Eliminates Florence in a 2024 Final Rematch

Defending event winner Barron Mamiya (HAW) once again got the better of John John Florence (HAW) in an electrifying Round of 16 rematch.
Mamiya opened with a Perfect 10-point ride for a flawless Pipeline barrel, mirroring his 2024 Final performance.
Florence, determined to turn the tables, responded with a massive 9.63 at Backdoor but was unable to close the gap, marking the end of his campaign.
“Surfing against John [Florence] anywhere, it kind of simplifies everything,” Mamiya said.
“You already know it’s going to be big scores. I knew he really wanted to beat me from last year, and yeah, it was a wild heat.”

Ferreira, Pittar, and Cleland Deliver Standout Performances

Former event winner Italo Ferreira (BRA) continued his charge, securing a Quarterfinal berth by defeating Seth Moniz (HAW) in the Round of 16.
Ferreira, who won at Pipeline in 2019, will now face compatriot Miguel Pupo (BRA), who advanced after surviving two priority interference heats.
Rookie George Pittar (AUS) produced one of the day’s biggest moments, taking down Kanoa Igarashi (JPN) in the dying seconds of their Round of 16 heat to become the only 2025 rookie to reach Finals Day.
“The fact that I’m standing here right now, going into tomorrow, is ridiculous,” Pittar said.
Alan Cleland Jr. (MEX) also made a statement in the Round of 32, eliminating 2023 event winner Jack Robinson (AUS) in a thrilling exchange that saw Cleland post a near-perfect 9.50 before Robinson responded with a Perfect 10.
Despite the historic moment, Cleland advanced, marking Robinson as the first surfer since 2017 to lose a heat with a Perfect 10.
“I knew I had one of the toughest heats of my life,” Cleland said.
“I’m just stoked to be in the mix and pushing my limits.”
Cleland’s run ended in the Round of 16, where Ian Gouveia (BRA) eliminated him with a 9.00, setting up a Quarterfinal clash with Slater.
With Finals Day set, the Lexus Pipe Pro is primed for an epic finish.
