Written Choice too speedy at Sandown debut

Trainer Logan McGill has had some nervous moments during the win of Written Choice at Sandown.

As the field raced down the straight in the Chandler Macleod Plate (1000m) on Wednesday, McGill was wishing he had applied blinkers to the first starter.

In the end it didn’t matter as Written Choice ($7.50), under apprentice Brandon Stockdale, scored a length victory from Sworn Evidence ($13) with Riel Reward ($7.50) the same margin away third.

“We played around with winkers and blinkers in his trials and elected to go with winkers,” McGill said.

“We probably should have gone with blinkers. He might have won by further.”

Written Choice has always shown McGill potential in his trackwork and he believes the three-year-old son of Written Tycoon has a bright future.

Just how far he goes at his first campaign will be a step by step process for McGill.

“He’s a November foal,” McGill said.

“I think he’s going to be a really good horse in the autumn with this prep under his belt.

“We’ll just take it step by step but if he’s ready for the paddock then he can go.

“I think he’s a horse with a good load of ability and hopefully he can take the step to the next grade.”

The win gave Stockdale his 20th metropolitan winner meaning his 3kg claim will come down to 2kg after he rides at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
