Winx to be sent for a spell
Racing fans will have to savour Winx’s second Cox Plate win with the mare to be sent to the spelling paddock instead of the Emirates Stakes.
Trainer Chris Waller issued a statement on Monday, two days after Winx’s spectacular eight-length win over Hartnell at Moonee Valley, confirming she would not race again this spring.
He said she had come out of the race in good order apart from a minor abrasion to her hind leg which he had decided to treat with antibiotics.

“Simple bathing and a trip or two to the beach would see it naturally heal; however I have taken the aggressive approach of treating it with antibiotics to ensure no risks are taken,” Waller said.
“Serious consideration was given to running in the MacKinnon Stakes in two weeks; however we have carefully deliberated on what is best for the horse as well as ensuring she spends a reasonable period in the spelling paddock..
“At this stage targets in the Autumn are yet to be discussed but the most logical races will make up her autumn campaign. Other options such as travelling overseas and returning for a third Cox Plate in 2017 are also items the owners and I will discuss in the near future.”
Waller said he appreciated the admiration shown by the racing public but her longevity was the most important thing.
