Whypeeo back to best form in Gold Edition

Whypeeo wins the Gold Edition Plate.
Whypeeo makes a timely return to winning form with an all-the-way victory in the Gold Edition Plate.

Smart three year old Whypeeo bounced back from a disastrous start to his campaign to show his true form with a strong in in the Listed Gold Edition Plate at Doomben.

Whypeeo was set to resume at Doomben last month but he was scratched when heavy rain drenched the track.

Trainer Toby Edmonds the decided to take Whypeeo to Sydney where he ran third at Canterbury as a $1.30 favourite.

Whypeeo ($6) showed that form was astray when he led most of the way to beat the favourite Pierata ($2.30) by a short neck.

Shogun Sun ($10) ran home strongly to be third 2 1/4 lengths back.

There was more drama after the race when several jockeys complained they did not get a fair start.

Jockeys spokesman Jim Byrne, who rode Bring It Home Pop, said as many as six horses had missed the jump because the starter’s button had been pressed too late.

Chief steward Alan Reardon watched the start on video and found there was no reason to declare a no-race.

Edmonds said there had been excuses for Whypeeo at Canterbury and he had expected better run at Doomben.

“It was his first trip away and it was a windy night and he got stirred up. He was slow to jump and had to be used up early.

“I knew he would be fitter and he is a smart horse when he is right.”

Edmonds said Whypeeo would now run in the Vo Rogue Stakes in a fortnight and go on to the Magic Millions Guineas.

Whypeoo’s win puts him in line for a $400,000 bonus for any horse winning three select races up to and including the Magic Millions Guineas.

Pierata is also still eligible for the bonus after winning the Winning Rupert Stakes two weeks ago.

Jockey Corey Brown said Pierata had been unlucky after missing the start.

Trainer Kelly Schweida said Shogun Sun would also contest the Vo Rogue and the Millions Guineas.
