The West Coast Eagles and Richmond Tigers may have started the 2022 AFL season poorly, but they should still serve up a great contest at Optus Stadium this Friday night.
It is well documented how badly the Eagles have been hit by COVID and injuries this year, but the team has slowly started to build some continuity over the last three weeks.
Damian Hardwick’s Tigers have won only two of their last five games since Dustin Martin took some time away from the club, but they were still impressive against the reigning premiers in round six.
Although Melbourne beat Richmond by 22 points last weekend, the defensive quartet of Nick Vlastuin, Jayden Short, Nathan Broad and Josh Gibcus all thrived under pressure.
The Eagles may be short on players in the midfield, but they are still near full strength in their forward half and will test Richmond’s in-form backline.
With Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling, Liam Ryan and Willie Rioli causing havoc inside 50, any team would struggle to defend the Eagles, but it all depends on how well they move the ball through the middle.
The Tigers are not without their own talented forwards. Both sides are filled with classy players up front, which should make for a high-scoring game.

Key matchup: Jeremy McGovern vs Tom Lynch
Jeremy McGovern’s intercept marking and rebound play is a massive roadblock for most teams, but a strong key forward who can take a contest mark is the best way to slow him down. Tom Lynch is one of the best key forwards in the AFL when he is switched on, as the premiership star moves well for his size and knows how to kick a set shot. If Lynch can get going early and force McGovern to defend, the Tigers will can navigate their way around the Eagles defender and win the match.
West Coast vs Richmond match betting
We think the Tigers have been better than their ladder position suggests, as their team features top players in every line. Richmond ruckman Toby Nankervis should tear the Eagles apart given Nic Naitanui is ruled out, giving the Tigers a huge advantage in the most important area on the ground.
Richmond by 1-39 points
West Coast vs Richmond goalscoring tips
One area the Tigers have been solid this season is the start of their matches, as they often come out of the blocks with a couple of early goals. The Tigers have led early in most of their matches this season, including their recent losses to the Crows and Demons. We trust the Tigers to start hot once again this weekend over in WA, where they will want to drown out the opposition crowd noise.
Richmond first to 3 goals
West Coast vs Richmond same-game multi
In what should be a high-scoring game in the West, we are backing Richmond to start well and get the job done this Friday night against the Eagles away from home.
