West Coast v St Kilda R12 preview

St Kilda will be looking to break a run of three successive defeats when they head across to Optus Stadium on Saturday afternoon to face West Coast in round 12 of the 2024 AFL Premiership season.

At home, the Eagles enter as slight favourites at $1.78 with Unibet, while the visitors are paying $2.05 with PlayUp. With a close game expected, top AFL bookmakers have listed the line at 2.5 points.

Last Sunday, it was a disappointing performance from West Coast as they suffered their biggest loss of the season, going down to the Adelaide Crows by 99 points. After conceding seven goals to nil in the first quarter, the Eagles never recovered, losing every quarter while kicking just five goals for the day.

Despite the loss, West Coast are an improved side from last season. As the pre-season betting favourites for the wooden spoon, they have already earned the same amount of wins as 2023.

After getting through the Adelaide match unscathed, there are no forced changes for Adam Simpson’s side. Off-season recruit Matt Flynn is a chance to play his first game for the club in the ruck after returning through the WAFL last week, while Jack Petruccelle is also available to return from an ankle injury.

St Kilda’s poor form continued last Sunday as they fell to Melbourne by 38 points at the MCG. Trailing by 25 points at quarter time, the Saints were never in it, as their offensive struggles continued.

After making the finals in 2023, St Kilda have arguably been the most disappointing team in 2024. With just three wins, Ross Lyon’s men sit in 15th spot, only ahead of the Eagles on percentage.

With the shortest injury list in the AFL, there are no forced changes for the Saints this week, but don’t be surprised if experienced players such as Brad Crouch, Tim Membrey and Hunter Clark are in the frame after strong performances in the VFL.

West Coast v St Kilda betting predictions

Although the Eagles were well beaten last week, they are a completely different side at Optus Stadium, with all three of their wins coming at the venue. Since round two, the Saints’ only wins have come against the bottom two sides, and they are averaging 56.7 points per game over the past three weeks. At home, West Coast should be too strong, winning by 1-39 points at $2.25 with top Australian bookmakers.

A key improver for the Eagles this season, key forward Jake Waterman is locked in a battle for the Coleman Medal. Averaging three goals per game, the 26-year-old will be keen to bounce back from a quiet day against the Crows. Waterman had kicked three or more goals in each of the five weeks prior to round 11, so back him to do it again at $2 with top AFL bookies.

With more than 29 disposals in each of his last four matches, half-back Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera is one of few positives for a struggling St Kilda side. The 21-year-old leads the Saints for uncontested possessions and effective disposals, while he also takes the most kick-ins. Back him to collect 30 or more disposals once again at $3.60 with AFL betting sites.
