Weir on the board on Ballarat Cup day

Brugal Reward wins at Ballarat
Darren Weir-trained Brugal Reward has beaten favourite Royal Fashion at Ballarat.

Hometown trainer Darren Weir received a little more satisfaction out of the win of Brugal Reward at Ballarat.

Weir retained a share in the winner of Saturday’s Sam Miranda Handicap but says the result is more pleasing because of his association with longtime stable clients Boswald and Blonde Parker.

The trainer and the Parker brothers are part of a syndicate of owners of the four-year-old daughter of Reward For Effort, who took her prize money to $240,000 after Saturday’s success.

“Jeremy (Rogers) and John Foote picked her out as a yearling and I’m always happy to take a share when they pick one out,” Weir said.

“The Parker boys have been with me right from when I first took out my trainer’s licence.

“I used to break in their horses when I was breaking in horses, that’s how long we go back.

“They say it’s easier to syndicate if I take a share in them so I’m happy to take five or 10 per cent.

“I try to sell as many as I can but you sometimes get left with a few.”

Ridden by Ben Allen, Brugal Reward ($8.50) scored a half-length win over $3.80 favourite Royal Fashion, with Soho Ruby ($5.50) a neck further back in third.
