Week on the Punt: Lynnsanity unleashed in Big Bash League
The final weekend before Christmas delivered plenty of sporting highlights. Here are the best of the bunch.
Lynnsanity goes big in the BBL
If you were watching the Big Bash League on Sunday afternoon, you would have witnessed a truly brilliant innings from the best batsman the BBL has ever seen.
Chris Lynn came in after the first wicket for the Brisbane Heat and could not be stopped, making 94 runs off only 35 balls. If he had not been caught on the rope in his final hit, he would have made it to 100 in 35 balls, breaking the record for the quickest century in BBL history.
Shaun Marsh and Mitchell Marsh had a great time as the brothers faced off for the first time since Shaun’s departure to the Melbourne Renegades. Mitch was the happier brother when the game finished, as his unbeaten 56 led the Perth Scorchers to victory.
The Sydney Thunder and Adelaide Strikers match was called off due to bushfire smoke in the area, which is causing mass chaos across the country in this blistering heat.
Star duos shine in big weekend of NBA and NBL
The NBA duos were out in full force over the weekend, putting up more jaw-dropping numbers and winning matches for their sides. It started with CJ McCullum and Damian Lillard combining for 67 points in Portland’s victory over Orlando, taking the Trail Blazers to eighth in the Western Conference.
Another massive combo took place in Phoenix, but it was the visiting Houston Rockets that shined brightest. James Harden and Russell Westbrook scored 77 points in a big road victory over the Suns, putting them closer to the top of the NBA West.
Back on Aussie soil, Melo Trimble and Shaun Long were too strong for the Perth Wildcats as Melbourne United recorded a very strong victory away from home.
Liverpool win Club World Cup as EPL rolls on
There was plenty of celebrating on Merseyside as Liverpool overcame a cramped schedule to win the FIFA Club World Cup with a 1-0 extra-time win over Flamengo in Qatar.
Back in the English Premier League, where the Reds are runaway leaders, Manchester City beat Leicester City 3-1 to move within one point of the second-placed Foxes. Jamie Vardy opened the scoring for Leicester, but Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus gave the Citizens a much-needed win.
Vardy is paying $2.10 with Sportsbet to hit the most EPL goals this season. He currently sits six goals ahead of the next best player on 17, with several players tied on 11.
