Warriors v Panthers preview
Sunday’s NRL action for Magic Round 2024 kicks off with the wounded New Zealand Warriors taking on a reinvigorated Penrith Panthers side at Suncorp Stadium.
The Warriors have lost their last four matches in a row, going down to the Dragons, Titans, Knights, and Roosters. Having dropped from seventh on the NRL ladder down to 14th, they could finish round 11 as low as 16th.
Meanwhile, the Panthers have continued their ascent up the ladder. Wins over the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs in the last fortnight have pushed them up to second place, one win behind the league-leading Sharks.
Warriors coach Andrew Webster will be without star halfback Shaun Johnson (pectoral), Rocco Berry (hand), and Freddy Lussick (concussion) due to injury, with Edward Kosi being dropped. Taine Tuaupiki will start at fullback, with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad moved to pair Te Maire Martin in the halves, while Marcelo Montoya returns on the wing. Ali Leiataua will start in the centres, with Jacob Laban added to the bench.
Reports also suggest captain Tohu Harris has a broken finger and will be ruled out of this match. His replacement is yet to be confirmed.
The Panthers will be without superstar halfback Nathan Cleary (hamstring) and Liam Martin (omitted). Jack Cole will play in the halves with Jarome Luai, and Daine Laurie will come off the bench.

Warriors v Panthers predictions
The Warriors have lost each of their last 14 clashes with Penrith and have failed to cover the line in five consecutive games. Meanwhile, the Panthers have won both halves in each of their last five matches against the Wahs. Such is Penrith’s dominance in recent years that even without halfback Cleary, they will be expected to win both halves once more at $1.87 odds with the top NRL bookmakers.
On top of their impressive record against NZ, the Panthers have won both halves in each of their four games in the NRL. Expect more of the same from the defending champions as they complete the half-time/full-time double ($1.35).
Warriors winger Marcelo Montoya returns to the side having been dropped due to poor form and missing a dozen tackles already this year. At the same time, Panthers jet Brian To’o has scored tries in each of his last five meetings with the Warriors. Having bagged two tries in his last three matches, expect To’o to continue his brilliant scoring form ($1.72).
