NZ Warriors vs Eels Rd 22 match preview

The 2024 NRL Premiership continues on Friday night with the struggling Parramatta Eels travelling across the ditch to take on the New Zealand Warriors at Go Media Stadium in Auckland.

The Warriors returned to winning ways against Wests last weekend, getting home by 12 points at this ground to snap a two-game losing streak. NZ have an outside chance to earn a spot in the NRL finals, but they cannot afford to falter from here.

Meanwhile, the Eels’ losing streak has been extended to six matches. Parramatta started well against the Storm in Melbourne last weekend, scoring two tries in the first 20 minutes, but went on to lose by three converted tries. The club will be desperate to win as it looks to avoid winning its first wooden spoon since 2018.

Interim coach Trent Barrett has named an unchanged Eels side following last week’s loss.

Warriors coach Andrew Webster has named star spine members Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad (calf) and Shaun Johnson (Achilles) to return from injury at fullback and halfback, respectively. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck shifts to the wing in place of Edward Kosi, while Te Maire Martin drops to the reserves. Tom Ale replaces Jackson Ford, who is out with a knee injury.

Warriors v Eels Rd 22 NRL predictions

Although they won their last match against the Eels by a whopping 36 points, the Warriors lost each of their previous four meetings. However, this is their first clash in New Zealand since round six in 2017, when the home side won by 12 points. With the Eels losing each of their last eight away matches, back the Warriors to win at -454.55 odds with top NRL bookmakers.

The return of veteran playmaker Shaun Johnson will enormously boost NZ’s attack and winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak’s try-scoring output. ‘DWZ’ has scored five tries in his last seven appearances, and Johnson’s return, combined with his strong kicking game, will create even more attacking options. At odds of -238.1 with Neds, Watene-Zelezniak is almost certain to score a try.

Warriors prop Addin Fonua-Blake has returned to try-scoring form of late, crossing the try line in his last two matches. As the Eels have conceded tries to middle forwards in three of their last four matches, Fonua-Blake is likely to crash over again for a try at +120 with rugby league bookies.
