Warriors v Broncos match preview
Super Saturday for round 13 on the 2023 NRL season kicks off in Napier with the New Zealand Warriors hosting the Brisbane Broncos at McLean Park. The last time these two sides met was when the Warriors were based at Redcliffe and beat the Broncos in convincing fashion. Will the visitors be able to return serve across the ditch?
The Broncos have made several changes to their side with Pat Carrigan, Payne Haas, Reece Walsh, Selwyn Cobbo and Thomas Flegler all called up to State of Origin duties. Tristan Sailor, son of Broncos great Wendell, will make his Broncos debut at fullback with Deine Mariner starting on the wing. Kenan Palasia, Corey Jensen and Kobe Hetherington have been named to start with Xavier Willison and Brendan Piakura coming off the interchange bench.
The Warriors have several changes to their side with Wayde Egan (calf) and Dylan Walker (toe) replaced by Luke Metcalf, who will make his Warriors debut in the five-eighth position. Meanwhile, Jackson Ford returns from concussion.
The Broncos have faced a tough run against the Panthers, Storm and Rabbitohs in the last month, recording just one win. They now face an even bigger challenge, travelling to New Zealand without their representative stars to take on a rejuvenated Warriors side. The Broncos will be expected to put up a fight, but lack the explosiveness and X-factor to beat the home side. The Warriors look a safe bet to win at $1.44 with Marantelli Bet.
With the loss of Cobbo on the wing, it is anticipated Jesse Arthars will become the main target of the Brisbane Broncos attack on the left wing. The former Warrior has shown this season he is more than capable of being a first-grade winger, scoring in the corner with incredible skill. Look for Ezra Mam to create the time and space for Arthars to be the Broncos’ first tryscorer ($5.40).
Mariner has been selected for his third NRL game on the wing for the Broncos, having spent the entirety of his 2023 season with the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls at centre. He will be equipped with the defensive decision-making ability to succeed at the top level but will need time to mature. The Warriors’ playmakers will need just half a chance to spot a mistake made by Mariner to put Dallin-Watene-Zelezniak in the corner for a try ($1.66).
Key matchup: Fonua-Blake v Jensen

The battle up front between these two forward packs will be the cornerstone of this match. Corey Jensen will need to be the man to stand up and lead this young Broncos pack in the face of Addin Fonua-Blake, one of the most damaging forwards in the NRL. Should Jensen be able to inspire youngsters Piakura and Willison, the Broncos will go a long way to setting the foundation for a win on the road. If they are unable to control Fonua-Blake and co. in the middle, they will be in for a very long evening.
