Waller makes flying start to Qld carnival
Champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller signalled he will again be the dominate factor in the winter when Sexy Eyes won the Listed Weetwood Handicap to give him the feature double at Toowoomba.
Waller had 40 minutes earlier had won the Toowoomba Cup with The Lord Mayor.
He has been by far the leading trainer in the past six winters and there is obviously more to come as the Toowoomba meeting heralds the start of the carnival.
Sexy Eyes ($7) races in the colours made famous by super star Winx but looks set to make her own name in the winter.
She was having her first run since winning the Group Three Belle Of The Turf at Gosford in December.
But she was too strong for Tycoon Ace ($19) with Mishani Hustler ($3.50) third in a blanket finish for the minor placings.
Waller’s Queensland manager Paul Shailer said Sexy Eyes would improve further for the win.
“She does go well fresh and she did have a trial. But she got into a bit of trouble early before really running home,” Shailer said.
“She only arrived up here late last week so she is still really to settle in. “
“Chris will probably map out a plan now to get her more black-type during the winter.
Winning jockey Robbie Fradd cemented his association with Waller with another clever ride.
“When you ride for Chris you know you are going to be on a fit horse,” he said.
“She got stronger as the race went on and if she can get over more ground she will be suited in the black type races this winter.”
Waller could be sending as many as another 20 horses north to his Gold Coast stables for the winter.
Jockey Emma Ljung said Tycoon Ace had run a great race after being trapped deep.
Taylor Marshall said Mishani Hustler did a good job at his first open company run.
