Waller believes an eventual Winx loss is ‘inevitable’
WINX’S trainer Chris Waller said it is inevitable that the mighty mare will get beaten again in her career, but hopes the loss does not occur any time soon.
Winx enters Saturday’s George Main Stakes at Randwick as the $1.10 favourite at Sportsbet.com.au in her second run back in preparation for her Cox Plate defence.
A win on Saturday would hand Australia’s best racehorse an amazing 11th straight victory.
Waller believes it is only a matter of time before his runner fails to past the post in first position, but as long as it is not on a certain day at Moonee Valley, he will be content.
“Winx will get defeated, but we won’t worry about that – we’ll bounce back.” Waller said.
“As long as it’s not Cox Plate Day or any race leading up to it, it won’t matter.”
The expectations on Winx this weekend are so high that Crownbet.com.au has opened an all-in market on the George Main Stakes without the star mare in the field.
Despite the supreme confidence around his runner, Waller said the undefeated streak is adding an unwanted weight of expectation.
“It’s an added pressure – because it’s no longer your horse, or the owners’ horse,” Waller said.
“The public certainly have their say, and have ownership of the horse, which is great.
“It’s good to have people talking about the horse you train, but the pressure for the horse to perform is different.
“It’s not that she has to win, but we like to make sure she just can’t be beaten.
“That day will come (that Winx will lose), Black Caviar is the only horse at that level in Australian racing that went undefeated.”
Winx was a race day scratching last weekend in the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick, but Waller said omission from the race was to give his runner an easier preparation heading into the more important spring meetings.
“She’s done everything right since her first-up run,” he said.
“We missed running in the Chelmsford, but that was by choice with the wet track. I didn’t want her having a tough run.
“She had a trial at Warwick Farm last Friday, eight days prior to her race.
“Hugh was very happy with the way she moved; the way she recovered from the trial so she’s spot on.
“The weather forecast is very good in Sydney this week, so we should be running on at least a better side of soft, if not a good track hopefully.”
