Umpiring controversy & bad haircuts in the AFL Rd 10 Twitter wrap
UNFORTUNATELY round 11 of the AFL season might be remembered as a weekend marred by controversial umpiring decisions rather than the wins and losses.
The round kicked off on Thursday night, and for the first time in a long while the countdown clock for set shots became part of the AFL zeitgeist.
The hottest debate of the weekend was set to be Charlie Dixon’s set shot play on call, which arguably swung the game back in Geelong’s favour given the Power full forward was unable to get a legitimate shot on goal away.
@NathanSchmook Exhibit B: The clock on the screen shows that Dixon started his run up within 30 seconds from getting up. Lame decision! pic.twitter.com/BDymKCVHXr

One Twitter user suspected it was a home-town advantage given the match was played in Geelong.

Does any1 seriously think the ‘Charlie Dixon time up’ decision would’ve been paid if it was Hawkins instead? #FreeKickGeelong— Paul Young (@ProTrackAust) May 25, 2017
Some even suggested that it should have been a moot point.
One eagle-eyed Twitter user believes Dixon should have been awarded a 50 metre penalty, which would have put him on the goal line.
@AFL how does this not get paid 50 against the Geelong player within 10 metres of Dixon, yet play on gets called ? pic.twitter.com/ir21cLcmQ3

The Dixon decision was set to be the biggest point of conjecture for the weekend, until Saturday night.

It is fair to say the call divided the Twittesphere.
Even the Magpie supporters took the Bombers’ side on this one.
Agree with that deliberate call. Didn’t try and do anything but put it through for a rushed behind. Deliberate. #AFLTigersDons

But even the fans on the receiving end of the call were not certain it was correct.
I’m an @EssendonFC supporter and even I know that that was not a free kick for deliberate rushed. #AFLTigersDons

With a haircut like this, you’d want to play well
Sometimes it is best to look past the umpiring decisions though, and one Collingwood player’s questionable haircut took some much needed attention away from the officiators.

One Twitter user thought it was a bigger issue than Saturday night’s divisive call.
Forget the deliberate rushed behind last night, the most questionable decision of the weekend may be Jamie Elliott’s hair. #AFLPiesLions

And we think it is hard to disagree upon reflection.
What’s with Jamie Elliot’s hair?? ??

Lucky the gun forward booted four goals otherwise we reckon Bucks would have the clippers out on Monday.
