Ulmann Perth bound following Caulfield win

Damian Lane wins on Ulmann at Caulfield.

Ulmann will spearhead a team of Darren Weir-trained horses to Perth following his victory in a stakes race at Caulfield.

Weir has Group One entries for the Perth carnival in the Winterbottom Stakes, the Railway Stakes and the Kingston Town Stakes and plans to take a team of up to 10 horses.

Ulmann, and runner-up Burning Front from Saturday’s Moonga Stakes (1400m) are among the nominations for Perth.

“We’ll take a few hopefully but they can drop off between now and then,” Weir said.

“You could have a team of 10 but end up only taking two.

“We want to take a bit of a team and Lindsey Smith said we can use his place as it’s a good place to train.

“These horses aren’t trained on a track and his place sort of replicates what we do.”

Weir won last year’s Kingston Town Stakes with Stratum Star and stayed at Smith’s property for the carnival.

He said Ulmann would follow a similar program to that of Stratum Star in the lead-up to the first of the Group One races, the Railway Stakes at Ascot on November 25.

The leading trainer thought runner-up Burning Front was more advanced for Saturday’s race than his stablemate.

Ridden by Damian Lane, Ulmann ($9.50) scored by three-quarter of a length from Burning Front ($6) with Wyong visitor Echo Effect ($13) a half-length away third.

Ulmann’s win was the fourth of the meeting for Weir on one of the biggest days of the racing year.

“You’ve got to pinch yourself because it usually doesn’t happen like that,” Weir said.
