UFC Conor McGregor appeals assault conviction after €250,000 fine
UFC superstar Conor McGregor has vowed to appeal the civil case brought against him by Nikita Hand, after a jury found him guilty of sexual assault on Friday in Ireland.
McGregor was fined just short of €250,000 as a result of the ruling, which related to an incident that occurred in a Dublin hotel in 2018.
The Irish UFC star did not immediately comment on the outcome of the trial, but has since issued a statement on social media.
“I will be appealing today’s decision,” he wrote.
“The judge’s instruction and the modest award given was for assault, not for aggravated or exemplary damages.
“I am disappointed that the jury did not hear all the evidence that the DPP reviewed.
“I am with my family now, focused on my future.
“Thank you to all my support worldwide.”
McGregor claimed during the trial that he had “athletic, physical” sex with Hand, while she alleged that the interaction was non-consensual.
A two-year criminal trial resulted in no charges being pressed against McGregor, however Hand opted to pursue the matter in the civil court.
“I want to show my daughter and every other girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and justice will be served,” she said.
“To all the victims of sexual assault, I hope my story is a reminder that no matter how afraid you might be, speak up.
“You have a voice and keep on fighting for justice.
“I know this has impacted not only my life, my daughter’s, my family and friends tremendously, and it’s something that I’ll never forget for the rest of my life.
“But now that justice has been served, I can now try and move on and look forward to the future with my family and friends and daughter.”
McGregor, meanwhile, continues to be a part of the UFC roster, with the Irishman teasing his return to the promotion in recent weeks.
The former champion was slated to fight Michael Chandler in his first clash since breaking his ankle against Dustin Poirier in 2021, but the bout was postponed due to another injury.
Some UFC bookmakers are still offering odds for the fight and have McGregor a marginal favourite heading into 2025.
