Trekking ready for first Melbourne start

After a pleasing first-up run in Sydney, promising Godolphin colt Trekking has headed south and will chase his first Group race win in the McNeil Stakes at Caulfield.

Trainer James Cummings is convinced Trekking, who finished third to highly rated Menari and Siege Of Quebec in the Listed Rosebud Quality (1100m) first-up in Sydney, can make his presence felt in Saturday’s Group Three McNeil (1200m) for three-year-olds.

“He’s coming along brilliantly,” Cummings said.

“We’re delighted with his progress and he brings really good form through the Rosebud.

“I’d be expecting him to run very well in the McNeil tomorrow.”

Trekking has won one of his four starts and has a second in the Group Three Black Opal Stakes last season to go with his third at Listed level in the Rosebud.

His only unplaced run came in the Golden Slipper on a heavy track.

Trekking is on the second line of betting for the McNeil at $3.60 behind unbeaten colt Merchant Navy ($2.70) who resumes from a spelling having won his three starts as a juvenile including the Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in April at his most recent start.
