Trainer Ben Currie to maintain momentum

In-form trainer Ben Currie has finally recovered from a virus to be on deck for one of his busiest weeks of the racing season.

Currie had two runners at Rockhampton on Thursday and will have a further six at the central Queensland track on Saturday.

He will also have two runners at Doomben on Saturday and several others at Toowoomba, his home base.

Currie is confident of a city double with promising filly With A Promise in the Singapore Airlines Plate and Mishani Wrangler in the Listed Winning Edge Stakes at Doomben.

Currie was struck down by a virus last week.

“It hit me last Thursday. Usually when I get something like it I am over it in a day or two,” Currie said.

“But it wasn’t until Wednesday I started to feel OK and well enough to get back to the races.”

Currie is locked in a close battle with his friend Tony Gollan to win the Queensland trainers’s premiership.

“I would love to get 100 winners for the season for the first time but whether I can beat Tony is another matter,” he said.

“I give both my horses at Doomben good chances. With A Promise was very strong in winning at Ipswich last Saturday and she can back up in seven days.

“The 1350 metres shouldn’t worry her. She will probably go for a spell after Saturday as there isn’t much around and we will set her for the summer sprint feature races.”

Mishani Wrangler has won his past two starts at Toowoomba and Rockhampton.

“He is racing well and deserves a chance at a stakes race. He should also be suited at 1350 metres.”
